Question Posted Friday April 28 2006, 10:41 pm

is there anything that a doctor can do for an injured rib? I heard that if you fracture a rib or something, there is nothing you can do and you just have to deal with the pain. ♥

Hi,

At one time Dr's taped the ribs or used rib belts, but because of the risk of pneumonia some don't do this anymore. If you are young and active though, the Dr. may allow you to wear a rib belt while awake. The Dr. can prescribe medicine for pain and/or inflammation. One thing that is important if a rib is fractured, there is a risk of the bone causing a punctured lung, initially--and later from movement of the rib. This is why an x-ray is important.
