My sister has a small case of insomnia and she sleeps with a "sound conditioner". Basically, it is just a machine that plays a noise like, the ocean, wind, a train, etc. Without hearing all the noises in the house and having a steady noise, she now sleeps very well. Also, people's bodies function based on an internal clock- there are some things you can do to help your internal clock recognize "sleep time" sooner.
1. First and formost, set a bed time for yourself. This may seem little kid-ish, but it works. Set a time, and go to bed at tat time EVERY night, sleepy or not. If you aren't sleepy, just lay there in bed. Yes, it will be boring as heck, but you have to do it. The bordem itself can make you tired. ;)
2. do a specific activity RIGHT before you go to bed each night, I.E. Drink some warm milk (It's better with honey) before you go to bed. Such activites, after a while, will make your body go "Oh, I do this before I sleep every time...guess it's time to shut down."
Doing routine things like that will help your body adjust to a sleeping pattern that starts earlier. You may be extr tired when you first start these, but after a week or so, you'll see a difference in what time you start to get tired at.
(it's 1 am right now......I am an insomiac by choice)
