how do you take a search bar off .. like on a layout

Well if you mean the search bar on top of a xanga or myspace, then you can't and your account will probably be deleted.

But if you mean trying to take something off that says "Layouts by Katie" and its a link, then just go in a delete the HTML.

im not sure if what im gonna say is what your talking about but i am gonna takea shot at it.

If you mean like the thing that says i got this from.... you just go to the code and search for the thing that you click and just delete just that part.
