OK, I know NOTHING about laptops but I'm looking to buy one in the next year or so. All I really want it for is working on and going on a few websites. I know you can get laptops which you can access the internet from, without a connection - how does that work? Do you still have to register with an internet company like you would with a normal PC?
Basically, I don't know a thing and would like to be better informed before I start looking. If anyone could tell me what I should be looking for, it'd be a great help :)
waterrabbit1104 answered Sunday January 8 2006, 10:20 pm: If you're looking for a simple laptop, and plan to only use it for some work, you can get one for a nice price.
If you're work basically involves word documents (not too many photos), and no music, you odn't have to worry about getting a big hard drive (over 40 gb). If you aren't going to have a bunch of programs running all at once either, you don't need that high of a processer speed.
As for the wireless part, there are laptops with wireless adapters built in (mine being one of em), and they merely scan for existing wireless networks and jump on to the network.
My house has it's own wireless network set up, so all i had to do was turn on my laptop and hop on. If you don't have a wireless network in your house, then you will have to create one (with a wireless router hooked up to your internet; meaning you still have to pay for your own internet AND buy a wireless router).
there's also the option of going to places that already have wireless networks. Libraries and some shops (mainly starbucks) are starting to create wireless networks for their buildings, so that people can walk in and hook on to the network for free. I even heard a city is trying to make citywide wireless internet.
Anyway, if you do plan on moving a lot with your laptop, all over the house or such, then go for the wireless adapter built-in to a laptop, and spring for the wireless router (or, maybe you have a generous neighbor with a wireless network already set up). Otherwise, stick with cords, cause they're cheaper, and more secure. [ waterrabbit1104's advice column | Ask waterrabbit1104 A Question ]
TheLoveDoctor answered Sunday January 8 2006, 11:46 am: well, i use a laptop and i have a network card that lets me connect to the internet wirelessly. i still have internet going into my house but i have it set up so that my main computer is a network and i have my laptop is connected to that. i wish i could give you more detail about it but i didn't do it, i had my father do it. you should talk to someone in the store where you are planning on buying your laptop because they might know how it works better than i do.
hope i helped though. :) [ TheLoveDoctor's advice column | Ask TheLoveDoctor A Question ]
