Well, I haven't gotten my period yet and I'm in 8th grade, but my mom said she got hers when she was in like 5th grade! Is this normal? Because it's hereditary, right? But I still haven't gotten mine. How come I haven't gotten it yet?

Yes, it's hereditary. But don't forget there's your dad's side and his mom & there's your grandmas & all other older females in your family. Seriously, everyone's different, and it's completely normal. I started mine when I was 11, but my mom started hers when she was 17. :) It varies, and it's not abnormal, trust me.
