customized desktop icons

Question Posted Thursday December 29 2005, 11:32 am

I'm trying to make my own desktop icons. I can draw them just fine, but how do I save them as icon files?

Additional info, added Thursday December 29 2005, 12:36 pm:
I don't mean putting shortcuts for programs on the desktop. Windows comes with a ton of cool icons, so I can have a clam instead of a folder. But I want to be able to make my own. I can only save it as .bmp, .jpg, .gif, or .png. Windows doesn't let you use something as an icon unless it's an icon file, which I think is .ico. I can't save it as .ico, so I can't make my own icons. But other people do it all the time, so there has to be a way.

You need a program that can save .ico files, like IconArt or the GIMP. The GIMP also has a lot of other functions so I would recommend that. You can download IconArt from [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) and the GIMP from [Link](Mouse over link to see full location).
