I have DDRmax2, but there should still be a 'Training Mode' on your game. Try going through all the stages of that first. Then start playing on 'Beginner' mode, until you get good at it. Then you can work your way up to light, then standard, then Heavy if you get good at it.

Nothing is going to make you better at it except for practice!

Turn down the difficulty. Either do it on light or beginning - and go through the training mode stuff. It makes a difference once you discover you can spin around in a circle when there's a certain pattern to the arrows.

They're all equally hard, trust me.
The older versions can be a lot tougher than you expect.
Try the DDR Max on the "light" level. I promise that's a lot easier.
Work your way up by doing the "Training Mode", where you can play any song without the worry of failing it.

You got to just work up to the harder stuff..
