Hey I do crew! As you have pointed out, it is very time consuming - but in the end worth it. Hmm talk to your ballet instructor and the crew coach to see if you can work something out. I don't know how the practice schedule for crew is - mine is 6 days a week, with races. Since all of the races are on the weekends, there are some that are on Sunday. See if you can work something out so that if you do go to practice 6 days a week, to let you go to at least 1 ballet practice.
Depending on when the spring season starts for you, I'm pretty sure that the first 3 or 4 weeks is easy light, in terms of practices and races and time. You should use that time to experiment and see what works best for you, if doing ballet twice a week, on Monday or Wednesday, or any other combination you can think of. You have time to plan things out. There is a way to go to your ballet and still get a work out for crew. If you havn't heard of them already, there are indoor rowing machines, called ergometers. You can see what they are like: www.concept2.com It's the machine that is used by just about everyone to get virtually the same workout as you would on the water. Look around to see if your school or a gym near by or anywhere else has them. If they do, try to use them after your ballet practice - but make sure you learn the right technique of course. But yeah talk to your coaches and tell them your situation and ask if you could try that - erging on Mondays and/or Wednesdays. Hope that helped and good luck!
