Yikes. Well, keep working on him. He needs to go to a doctor and find out for sure. Even if he doesn't tell his mom. It doesn't sound like any cancer I've heard of, but not knowing the other symptoms it's hard to tell. Support him, and let him know you understand why he's nervous, but remind him that if you're going to fight something, you have to know what it is. What you don't know CAN hurt you sometimes.

He's either a really big hypochondriac or really wants attention. Naturally, he needs to get this bump checked out but he has no business going around and scaring people who care about him into thinking he has a terminal illness. Don't give him sympathy- just tell him to get it checked out. If it turns out to be serious, THEN give him sympathy.

maybe he should go to a doctor and find out before assuming anything, and telling people things that might not be true.

He needs to see a doctor, as soon as possible. Tell him to stop worrying about telling people; his life is much more important than temporary social discomfort.
