How do I turn an absolute value function (like |-2x - 8|) into a compound function?

TimmyTM is right, but in addition, you also need to set the range for the new functions in order to accurately represent the absolute value equation. Find the vertex of the absolute value equation (set it equal to 0, in this case it is at [-4,0]) and use that to create bounds for the new system of equations. Your final answer should look like this:

y = -2x-8 [-∞ < x < -4]

y = 2x+8 [-4 <= x < ∞]

The result is going to be a positive number. Therefore, you simply take the positive and the negative of the function, and there's two way to arrive at the same function.

(-2x -8) and

-(2x -8)


Reduce if warrented.
