This song has a hint of jealousy in it. The singer wants to be this girl's boyfriend, but he's not. "I'm just a notch in your bedpost but you're just a line in a song" indicates that he means nothing to her, and he's trying to make it seem like she means the same to him. But it's not working too well. The chorus is about their relationship failing miserably in "an earlier round" because they don't even have a relationship.
