While the delegates were meeting in Albany, the British had begun building a fort along the Ohio River. However, the French drove them off and built Fort Duquesne (DOOH-kayn) on the site. A young Virginian named George Washington arrived with more soldiers and built a simple fort, which he named Fort Necessity. The French attacked, causing many casualties—killed, injured, or captured soldiers—and forcing Washington to surrender. Washington's defeat in 1754 was the start of the French and Indian War, between Britain and France.
