Which model?

Question Posted Sunday September 25 2005, 2:16 pm

I need to buy a laptop for use a university. I hate Microsoft, so I'm trying to avoid models with a Windows OS. I guess this leaves me with Apple, so what model should I go for? I'll need it for the internet, storing pictures and writing essays. Money is not really an object, but a price below £1000 would be good. I'd like it to be fast enough to run a fairly graphics-heavy game. If you could also recommend some features that I should look out for (like graphics cards and virus checkers), that would be great too.

I am in the UK, btw, so the laptop market here might be a bit different from the US one (ie different models and companies).

Yeah, don't worry: I've checked all the games I want to run and they're fine for an Apple..

If you want to run very graphics heavy games ~ You may want windows, Apple isn't very friendly with the gaming industry.

You have more than just apple for an option as far as an operating system goes ~ there are countless numbers of Linux distrobutions out there ~ some even free.

Laptops for gaming aren't very ~ well, good. If you can avoid the gaming, you can probably get an average laptop to do all of that ~ unless you absolutely want an apple - get a copy of linux to put on there (RedHat is nice, but there are plenty of other options) and just write essays, store pictures and such on there. Linux has its own version of AIM, MSN and such ~ so you can still use all that (i'm not too familliar with apple and the availability of those applications on there)

I can't give you specific models, because there is quite a varying field. And i'm from the US~ so i'm not sure what options you are looking at in the UK.

If you want to play games, I'd make sure that the game you want is Apple compatible, as most games aren't.
