Card counting is a skill that a few, like myself, posess. What it is is you see which cards have been played. AKA, if you are playing texas hold'em, and 3 2s are shown, and you have a 2, you know that you have the only 4 of a kind at the table. Yet, it is also can come in games like war, where you memorise that your ace is after a 4-7, and when you see the 4, you are ready for the ace to come. It is illegal at casinos to count cards. A card counter is not a job, it's considered a hobby. I somehow learned how to count cards at a young age, and it is very difficult to explain...

They only get to see the cards that are laid face up on the table. By keeping track of those in their heads, they can sort of figure what kind of odds their hand has.
For example, a card counter might see two Ace's in his hand, and hope to draw the other two. But if he kept track (by remembering that a player had laid down a pair of Ace's before), he wouldn't bet too high because he knew that he couldn't get the four Ace's that he wanted.

They do it in games like blackjack so they know what the next card is going to be. [ TaintedPurity's advice column | Ask TaintedPurity A Question ]
