The region becoming black and blue is a real good indicator. You definitely know when you tear a muscle because it hurts like HELL. You do have to see a doctor and get it treated. I tore my right bicep doing Preacher Curls and believe me it sucks.

If it hurts badly, if you do not have close to the normal range of motion, and if it does not get better after 3-6 days, then you probably did tear a muscle.
If you do not go to the doctors, it may never heal. Torn muscles sometimes require surgery in more extreme cases. Go to the doctor, it is needed,

torn msucles are easy to tell, you simply cant move the muscle

if you play sports such as handball you can strech your muscles which hurts and takes like 4 -7 days to heal.

if you have a torn muscle you simply wouldnt be able to even move the body part, i suggest you get imidiate medical attention if you did rip your muscle.

well i tore a muscle near my knee cap, so i knew that i tore a muscle because i was in so much pain and i had to go to the doctor's so i could get a cast and crutches. so if your in a lot of pain then i would go to the doctor's if i was you. if you not in so much pain then put an ice pack on it and see how it feels. if you need more help i'm here.
