Question Posted Thursday August 11 2005, 11:40 pm

I've played on a soccer team ever since I turned 7 (except for one year when I was 11 and skipped to play year round baseball). Last season, I was injured and out of it for 6 months. No physical activity or anything. Horrible for an active kid like me. This year I'm playing under 16, and it's gotten pretty competitive. I am not an extremely competitive person with things that I'm not terrific at.

I still have two (2) days to back down and not play. But the thing is, I'm positive that I'll regret either decision. I'm starting high school this year, and I don't know how busy I'll be with that, and I'm afraid I'll injure my knee again. Should I choose the more active one? I'm not asking for you to make the decision, just some helpful insight.

Thank you.

I think you should play. If there was one thing I learned from my physical therapist, it is that it is more difficult to injure a knee a second time after treatment that it was at the beggining. The knee should not be a limiting factor, unless you are in excruciating pain when doing something (I.E., I couldn't do breastroke when swimming...)
Besides, you need an active life. It is obvious in your question when you told about the 6 months away from activity. You couldn't stand it, and if you get away from soccer, those 6 months become permanent.
And you're a teenager, so I'd definately suggest that you try to do as many activities as possible through this time, even if it seems like you have no time.

well you will be very busy in highschool.its pretty much a fact.but i would definetly keep playing, and once your out there playing on the field youll realize how competitive you really are. and the excerise will be good for you since you havent been able to do much for 6 months.

hope i helped XoXo

I'm in kinda the same sitch. But I didn't get injured, I'm just getting tired of soccer. I'd say, list the pros and cons. Then choose. You're lucky you have a choice, I have to play whether I want to or not.

Well no doubt that highschool will have you busy. But if you are not in a lot of other activities, then you should be okay. Just decide If you want to play. Think about how many years you have put into soccer, and if you want to give that up. I gave up my sports when I went into highschool, and I regret it everyday. I miss being a part of the team, and I miss having something to do everyday. But the main factor you should look at is If you have fun playing, and If you honestly like it. That should give you your answer

Start off with the main question: Do you want to play soccer? Reguardless of any factors such as injuries or school work or money, do you want to play? You gotta love the sport to do well. I say in the short amount of time you have to decide this, make a list. Write everything down. Write all the positive things, and all the negative things. Look the list over and see which one will be of a greater impact. If there are more negatives than positives, doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, but that you should give some careful thought into it as well.

If you really want to play and want to do well, then don't worry about being the best, just do your best. That means practice. Yeah I know, 'everyone says that'. But actually going outside, even if its on your own and working on it will pay off in the long run, always does. Again, totally your decision, but if you choose to do it, you could always try to back out and call it quits if it's not what you wanted and/or can't keep up with school. Good luck.
