you can still be friends with him if you want to and just explain to him you don't like him.

If you don't like him you don't have to date him. You can still be friends if you want too though. Just tell him you like him as a friend but don't have girlfriend feelings for him. Be polite because it takes some courage for a guy to admit he likes you. :)
