The biggest issue for most people is finding a record player that isn't shit. Seriously. Dumping the audio to your computer is fairly easy, but getting it to sound good can be the hard part. If you have a stereo and a turntable that puts out good sound that you're happy with, you just take sound output from the stereo and put it into your computer - either via mic input or line input (depending if you're using headphone output [mic] vs. line/RCA-plug output [line - unamped signal]).

There are a variety of programs that will allow you to record - probably some utilities that came with your computer and/or sound card. Also, MusicMatch Jukebox will do recording to file (either as a wav or direct to MP3).

I've used this method to dump from my 4-track to the computer to burn CDs of things I've recorded. The same method would work fine for vinyl.

I also know that at least locally, there are a few services (companies) who can do transfer of LP to CD - but they charge like $20 a shot. However, they have the best possible audio equipment and usually clean the LP to make sure you get the best possible duplication of the record. Obviously, if you have lots of LPs you want to transfer, this is cost prohibitive, so doing it yourself is desireable.

I helped my father-in-law do some of this LP to CD transfering a few years ago. He's since moved on to video... anyway... yeah... you should be able to do it, assuming you've access to a good turntable (you might be able to rent a really good turntable form anywhere that has DJ equipment).
