As others have already said, "gyno" can be short for "gynecologist".

But there's another meaning of the word which is a bit more common in my experience. A "gyno" is also short for a gynecological examination. It's pronounced "guy-neh-co-logical", by the way.

Girls are normally scheduled for their first gyno appointment when they have their first period.

Gynecologists are also called "OB/GYNs", which stands for Obstetrician/Gynecologist. Most (but not all) gynecologists are also obstetricians, and vice-versa.

Obstetricians specialize in treating pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative period following delivery.

A gyno is actually short for a gynecologist. I looked up this term in the dictionary, because I really didn't know how to explain it. Here is what the term means: The branch of medicine dealing with health care for women, especially the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the female reproductive organs; So in other words, it's like a doctor that looks at your female reproductive organs (mainly your vagina) to see if everything is good. They do this mainly when you start having sex, or turn 18; which every comes first. They check for STD's, infections and such.
