But there's another meaning of the word which is a bit more common in my experience. A "gyno" is also short for a gynecological examination. It's pronounced "guy-neh-co-logical", by the way.
Girls are normally scheduled for their first gyno appointment when they have their first period.
Gynecologists are also called "OB/GYNs", which stands for Obstetrician/Gynecologist. Most (but not all) gynecologists are also obstetricians, and vice-versa.

Here is what the term means: The branch of medicine dealing with health care for women, especially the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the female reproductive organs; So in other words, it's like a doctor that looks at your female reproductive organs (mainly your vagina) to see if everything is good. They do this mainly when you start having sex, or turn 18; which every comes first. They check for STD's, infections and such.
