PHP and internet compatibility
Can php be programmed straight into html code (like javascript), or does it need compilers and servers?

In order to program using the PHP language, you must save the file using a .php extension. Of course with a PHP extension you can still write using HTML.
Also, your server must support PHP. I can't really think of any paid hosts that don't support it, but most if not all free hosts do not support PHP.
