wanting to learn guitar

Question Posted Thursday June 9 2005, 3:41 pm

ok..so i want to learn how to play my electric guitar. would the person who teaches people be at a place that sells guitars? or a separate place? what am i supposed to say when i walk in? do you have an idea on how much i would go and how much it would cost? (like once a week, every week day, and so on) what will they teach me? dont say how to play...duh. but what will i learn? do you have an idea how long the lessons will be? (an hour, or what) and do you know how long it would be for me to be able to stop going to lessons? (a month? 3 months? how long?) and am i supposed to bring my guitar in each time i go to lessons? or am i going to be playing one of theirs? i think that would be pretty embarrasing to walk in holding a guitar ready for lessons...but it wouldnt seem right to be playing theirs when you should be getting used to yours or something. but whatever. or do you think i should just buy a tape and learn myself? please help!

You should go to a music store or to the guitar store and talk to the person there. And all the questions you asked would be perfect to ask him/her if he/she is a guitar teacher. You'll figure out the times from the person. Most likely you'll get it scheduled out. He/she will tell you when to bring your guitar, when you'll have lessons and for how long, they'll teach you cords most likely and songs I dont know what songs, because even though i wish i was, im not a physcic. He'll probably start you off with basics though, and then move to the hard stuff. Good Luck.

Ok, I'll break this down.

The store that sold you your guitar most likely has a teacher on-site. If they don't, then they can reccomend one to you, free of charge.

Say, "Hi. I'm interested on booking lessons. Do you have any teachers you can reccomend?"

The price should be no more than $25-30 per hour or $15 max for a half hour.

Most music lessons are about 30 minutes, give or take a minute or two.

It would probably take you a couple of years to totally master the guitar enough to manage without lessons. After you have mastered the basics, you can usually bring in music for them to help you learn how to play.

The guitar is a hard instrument to learn, so your teacher may loan you an acoustic to practice on. I reccomend learning acoustic before electric. I think it's easier.

You should bring your own guitar to and from your lessons, so you can practice 30-60 minutes per day.

Tapes are sometimes hard to follow, and can't correct you. A tape would be a good supplementary tool to use for review though.

I hope I helped!!

It always worries me when people talk about guitar lessons and they mention learning from tablature...

Learn to play guitar not from tablature, but from sheet music, chord notation, and playing by ear (listening to a song and figuring out how to play it). I've often found that lazy teachers use tablature as a crutch, and so that they don't really have to teach you anything. The really good teachers are able to impart to you a better understanding of the instrument and of music theory in general.

There's nothing wrong with taking lessons - in fact, the more effort you put into the lessons, usually the more you'll get out of it and be able to advance your skills faster.

Why should it be embarassing ot walk in holding a guitar? I walk into work with three guitars fairly often... if anything it is heavy to carry that many of them, but hey, I'm a freak... ;)

Early lessons shouldn't cost too much - anything in the $15-25 range is fairly par for the course. There are also such thing as group lessons (though most of those I've seen are for classical guitar), but I find the group approach too impersonal.

I know people who have played for years and years, and felt like taking lessons for a while to improve their technique. I know people who never took lessons. I know people who took lessons from the beginning and still take them. There's no set rule on how long anyone should take lessons for music, much less if they need them at all... it is all up to the individual - you have to ask yourself how you feel you best learn and make your decision from that.

Im in lessons now..and yes if you live near a shop theyre there or youll find some home based ones! And for what to say, just greet he person and ask things you want to know! it may be 35-70 bucks a month also :)THey will show you TABS, and guitar care most likely. Theyll give you many songs to play too! Yes bring your guitar, because everyone has a prefrence to their guitar, and you want to keep yours how you want it! Youll probably stay in lessons for 4 months or so, to get all of the facts down. If you need more help just ask, Im pretty good with music! GOOD LUCK! <3

Yes, it is quite often that the same people at the guitar shops that sell guitars also give lessons. That's why they hire them, they know what they're doing. Its usually once a week and it might cost about 10 dollars a lesson or so...you will learn chords, songs, technique, rhythm and much more. Lessons are usually anywhere from 30 min. to an hour. yes, you should bring your own guitar. Yes, you should know your own guitar and how it feels. Having a professional teach you is far, far better than a tape or trying to teach yourself, trust me.

Ok. . . Yes the places where they sell guitars do have lessons to teach you how to play the guitar. When you walk in you ask if they have lessons, how much, how long will you be in there taking lessons. Stuff like that. My brother went at music music for 30min every Saturday for 15 a month I think or lesson. They teach you how to read music and where the notes are on the guitar and lots of cool stuff. You could stop anytime as long as you called them and cancled that week or just to say you arn't intrested any more. My brother brought his instrument there when he played. I don't think they will let you use on of theirs but maybe. I would take lessons if I were you. Please Rate Me Well And Add comments. If you need someone else to help you with a question just send it to my inbox I am xobrowneyes. Thanks By The Way my bro is great he is playing ACDC songs and everything. BYE GOOD LUCK!!!

I'll answer your question in order

-The teacher can normally be at the place that sells the guitars
-They can be found at separate places
-When you walk in, just go up to the counter and say you're interested in buying a guitar and starting lessons
-It can cost between 15-25 dollars per half hour lesson depending on where you go
-They teach you whatever you want, they show you the basics, notes, chords, everything you want to know
-Lessons can be between a half and hour to an hour
-You can keep going to lessons for as long as you want, I've been playing for 2 1/2 years and I still go
-Yes you are supposed to bring your guitar to lessons
-You won't play one of theirs
-Lessons are 100x's better than learning from a tape.

You don't need to be nervous, standing with a guitar waiting for lessons is not embarassing at all. If they give lessons there, there will be plenty of kids there waiting with their instruments. Good luck! Guitars rock my socks =) Oh yeah, start out with a fender!!! They rock for beginners
