cheerleading again.

Question Posted Wednesday June 8 2005, 9:15 pm

Heh sorry, but your good advice was tempting to have me come back for more. You know that previous question you answered about cheerleading? Well, one of the answers I got had to do with cart wheels, round offs, etc. I'm just wondering if cartwheels and roundoffs have to be perfect for tryouts because those are my worse. Honestly, you haven't seen a terrible cartwheel until you've seen mine. Also, do you have to be able to do a split? Center or side? And what's a herkie? Thankyou!

Hey hun! No matter what people tell you, you DON'T have to be perfect at tumbling to be a cheerleader. Cheerleading is, as you know, a team sport & there are all sorts of jobs you can do on a squad that don't have to do with cartwheels, round offs, etc. Here are some of the jobs:

Backspot: If you've got concentration & are ready to save the day, this job is for you. You are there on the side incase the flyer falls & the base needs help. You're like the superhero of the squad.

Base: You're holding up the flyer. If you're strong & known for having great stability then this could be you. I find bases the most trustworthy people & a great position.

Flyer: If you're tiny (able to be lifted easily) then this is a great chance for you to shine. The bases lift you up & you're the one who's on top. Let's just say, not for anybody who doesn't LOVE risks & heights.

Tumbler: Basically, the person on the ground flipping around. Usually an advanced cheerleader doing all the complicated skills like round off backhandsprings, layouts, back tucks, etc.

And no, you don't have to be able to do a split. Like I said above, there are different jobs on the squad & not all of them have to do with flexibility. I do, however, reccomend stretching daily because it'll get you ready for try outs. Also, start eating plenty of nutritious food because you're body will need extra stamina. A non stop dance routine for 3 minutes can be quite strenuous.

A herkie is a type of jump. This is a picture of it: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location). It's an intermediate skill so don't worry if you don't have it down by try outs. Good luck & I'm sure you'll do great! If you have any more questions, I'm here for you!
