this kid IM-ed me and said bad stuff to me. is there any way i can find out who it is..maybe by finding out his address or something? if there isn't, that's fine but if you know anything, please tell me. thanks!

Yes and no. If you are VERY computer savvy I can tell you how to discover his IP address, but you will have to get him to talk to you again while running a special program called a packet sniffer.
The best way to handle it: If he said something like: "I am going to kill you!" or "I'll put a bomb in your locker" something like that, just take note of his screen name, go into the chat history, copy and paste the chat into a text file, and turn this over to the local police INSISTING that they DO something.
This falls under federal and local laws, and there are plenty of reasons to turn him in... Columbine would be a good one. There were lots of signs when these guys flipped out. Nobody took it serious.
Now, on the other hand, if they said something like "You're fat" or "I don't like you" then it is best to blacklist (block) them, and move on with life.
Without knowing which kind of situation it is, that's about the most I can do for you.
