If your mother is a Veterinary Technologist, then she should know how to handle ear mites. Ear mites are extremely common in normal practice. I'm only a Vet Tech student and I've dealt with plenty of cats with ear mites at volunteer clinics that I've attended.
She simply needs to clean their ears with cotton or be carefull with Q-tips. There are store bought ear mite solutions, or use warm water and soap. Ear mites are not really an emergency and can stand to wait until they get to a Veterinarian.
For the Upper Respiratory infection, you can keep the cats as comfortable as possible until they can get some medicine. The most comfortable way for them to lay is on their stomach. This gives the least amount of pressure on their lungs, and will make it easier for them to breath.
I'm sort of guessing that even this problem isn't an emergency, since these cats have probably been dealing with the issue for a long time before coming to your home.
OrionsFire answered Friday May 20 2005, 12:32 pm: You're going to want to keep them comfortable overnight, possibly keeping them on a heating pad. The Upper Respiratory Infection needs to be treated first thing in the morning, since it is the one that can progress to more serious problems. Make sure they are getting water, if they aren't drinking, you may need to force the water into their mouth with a syringe. The earmites, if they have any, will cause a dark brown/black goop in their ears that wouldn't normally be there. That is simple to treat if the vet sees them, they will give you drops to put in. Those are more of a pain then anything else, you are going to want to focus on their breathing at the moment. Like I said though, they need to go in the morning, otherwise there isn't much you can do except comfort them overnight. [ OrionsFire's advice column | Ask OrionsFire A Question ]
chocolate_lover answered Thursday May 19 2005, 11:52 pm: Earmites:
Flea control products that kill adult fleas will kill mites.
Unfortunately there are currently no drugs available to kill these viruses so treatment is aimed at supporting the cat through its illness. This treatment includes antibiotics, to treat any secondary bacterial infections as these can be life-threatening, and drugs to help loosen the nasal discharge and make breathing less of a struggle. As cats with 'flue are often reluctant to eat, they may need to be tempted by offering gently warmed, smelly and palatable food. Syringe feeding of liquid food can be tried if necessary, although caution is advised.
silentkate answered Thursday May 19 2005, 9:17 pm: My advice, although it's probably not what you want to hear, is to take them to an emergency vet. Respiratory infections can get serious for kittens fast, if you have an emergency vet near you I'd go ahead and take them. [ silentkate's advice column | Ask silentkate A Question ]
