The reason some orthodontists tell you not to have sugar is because sometimes it can losen your glue. Don't even worry about it!! Just don't overdo it with caramel and sticky stuff cuz thats what can harm you. Braces are supposed to be a good thing! Don't make em bad!!!
AdviceHelper4E answered Thursday May 19 2005, 6:06 pm: well. My sister has braces and she doesn't go by that rule and she eats whatever she wants, when she wants. but guess what? thats the worst idea ever! shes gotten gum stuck in her braces and she couldn't do anything to get it all out so she had to go to the ortho and they took like...2 hours to get it out and then she said it hurt. then once she was eating hard candy and her braces broke and a wire stabbed right into her gum. One tip i have is, if you want sugar, you can chew gum for like 15 minutes, chewing it carefully, you can eat like tootsie rolls but remember to brush your teeth, braces, and gums bc you'll have brown stuff all over your teeth. basicly, you can have any soft, non-chewey candies, and basicly any food with sugar. but try to keep low on sugar but it wont hurt to have some once and a while. brush your teeth often and make sure you brush your teeth VERY well before one of your orthodontist appointments
