Question Posted Wednesday May 18 2005, 5:02 pm

ohkay, my homework is overly hard. here are the instructions:

solve each system algebraically. Identify each system as consistent and dependent, consistent and indepepndent, or inconsistent.

The problem is:
3b=2a-24
4b=3a-3

Does anyone get that? Please step by step explain it to me..

5's for decent answers

Ok, we just did these in math class,
First, take the 3b=2a-24 equation and divide both sides by 3 so you get b=(2a-24)/3. Then Substitute that equation into The 4b=3a-3 equation. You will get an answer of a=6. Then Substitute that into the first equation and you will get b=-4. So the answer would be a=6, b=-4. I know, it takes a while, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy. If you still don't understand it, just ask! LYL ~lexi

Those above are equations for lines or linear equations. As difficult as it is for Meeshee to hear, the answers provided were wrong.

Let me explain each system first. Consistent and dependent means that the two lines are exactly the same, so it's easy to identify the equations which are consistent and dependent because the equations are exactly the same. An example would be: 3b=2a-24 and b=2/3a-8 ... both equations are exactly the same.

Consistent and independent means that the lines intersect. That means they touch each other at some point. For example, the letter X is an intersection of two lines and the point of intersection is the center of the X.

Inconsistent means that they are parallel. That means that they don't touch each other at all. It is also easy to figure out if lines are inconsistent because they have the same slope. For example, 3b=2a-24... and... 3b=2a-27..

To determine the slope, by the way, you have to isolate "b" and make the constant of "b" 1. Then, the number beside "a" is the slope.

Therefore, the system you mentioned is consistent and independent. If you follow Meeshee's method, but substitute the value of "b" as 2/3a-8, instead of only 2/3a, then you'll have the values of a and b if you substitute. Those are the points of intersection...

If what I said is still unclear, you can ask me to explain it more... good luck and sorry if this is late...

Are you asking how to solve it, or what? Are you given the values for the variables a and b? If you could ask me again with the additional info, I could probably help you. <3 Sporkster
