hand to hand V. NKPA

Question Posted Sunday April 24 2005, 2:11 am

there's a good chance i might get stationed in south korea in november, so i was wondering what kinds of martial arts the koreans use in hand-to-hand combat. this is very important to me, I've talked to people that were stationed there, and they say that a lot of south korean troops are black belts in jujitsu or other local arts. I need to know how to defeat a north korean soldier with similar training in unarmed combat. its a bit of a far flung contingency, but when my tank gets knocked out of action, my M-4 is out of ammo, and some bird-chested scoundrel is closing in for the kill, it would be a nifty piece of info. I am at present, a bar room style slugger with a mean right, slower than most in a scrum. if needed- 6'1" 182 lbs, barrel chested.
any form that will use the korean styles against themselves? or should i just carry my thai bush knife and an extra hand grenade?
-Gunner J. Hitler
p.s. I have a lot of problems, don't I?

Howdy Gunner,

Ok... This is going to save me a great deal of typing as I answered a question with most of the basics here:

... The thing to remember is this: In our culture, all of our entertainment seems to make hand to hand combat the most glorious thing ever... That, dear sir, is bullshit.

Hand 2 hand is the very LAST line of defense. If you get there, you better be prepared to do what it takes to disable your opponent.

Find yourself a vietnam era Army Ranger PATHFINDER... (Hi Dad!)

He'll be about 60 now, and tell him you totally and utterly dare him to defend himself using only his thumb. If he's not a head case, you'd better be prepared to have you ass handed to you.

What does this have to do with anything? Simple, they were taught every fast efficient way we know to disable and/or kill their opponent as fast as possible.

All this dancing around each other like you see in the movies is utter crap. Usually it is the first person to strike successfully that will "win."

Thumb to the eyes, ruptured ear drums, crushed larynx, nothing pretty.

What did mister "I will defend myself using only my thumb, son" tell me about fighting?

Walk away. No matter what you have to do, or what kind of shit they give you... Walk away.

If they will absolutely NOT allow you to walk away, be prepared to expidite their departure from this earth, since that's what they have in mind for you.

Now, this is mostly rambling and I know it. I have had about zero sleep, and it's been a heck of a day.

Here we go:

If you could only pick one to learn, and you REALLY are willing to put in the time, then Hapkido would serve you well. It is a Korean art, so you should have NO trouble finding an instructor.

I can't say enough about Aikido. It isn't so much fighting as not fighting. You have to see it to really understand it. Please reference the links in the other post for more.

If you want to know how to defend yourself, and your asvabs will allow, find your way into Ranger school. If you can find it on discovery or some such channel, look for "Ranger Challenge" that will give you an idea the kind of person you could become by using your Army time wisely.

The only place in the army where you can be absolutely certain that someone has your back. Nothing else counts, as most people in the service today are looking for easy college money. Rangers lead the way.

(All that having been said, if you could avoid the service right now I sure would do it.)

Keep your knife sharp and your eye for trouble sharper, and you should avoid most h2h situations. Your odds of even seeing the person responsible for your demise is like winning the lotto. :-(

If you are already signed up: Ranger school. If you survive the coming madness, there is a HUGE difference between saying: "I was in the Army" and "I am an Army Ranger formerly attached to the 101st Airborne Division." Anyone ever comes to me for a job with a verifiable Pathfinder badge on their resume, they instantly clear the field of all other comers. Anyone I know to be a combat veteran and a Ranger, is welcome to whatever I have to offer, and will be trusted with my goods and person on the very first day we meet. Reason: Ask me some time when you know me better.

Do you want people to think of YOU like that? Ranger school.

If not signed up yet, avoid service like the proverbial plague. Spend some time reading the blogs of people stationed around the Persian Gulf. It is a real eye opener. My hooah Ranger Pathfinder Dad, discouraged me. That should tell you something.

I have more, but I am falling asleep.

Goodnight,

Dangernerd.
