FernGully answered Friday February 25 2005, 1:03 am: No. Toxic shock syndrome is associated with tampons because they absorb so much moisture (which is what its supposed to do). Having this much moisture loss and getting some of the bacteria which I think is probably called Staphylococcus Aureus (I very well could have spelled this wrong, I don't think you care). So, with the combination of the absorbency of tampons and this bacteria, you can get toxic shock syndrome. They say you must change a tampon frequently because it reduces the risk.
So no, especially since if you are doing these activities right, there should be some kind of natural moisture happening. So long as you aren't upsetting the balance of moisture, you will be alright. [ FernGully's advice column | Ask FernGully A Question ]
