Birth controls

Question Posted Wednesday February 16 2005, 9:56 am

Me and my boyfriend have been dating for almost 2 years, be are both in our early 20's and decided that we are ready to have sex. He said that he doesn't know much about the different birth controls, so it's up to me to choose. I was wondering...
What are some different birth controls?
How effective they are?
How they work?
How much they cost?
And the good and bad things about them?

I remember a while back you said that you had taken some type of parenting class, and that you knew a lot about different birth controls, that's why even though you are 14 I'm asking you. And if you don't have all the answers I'm looking for, then maybe you can find some websites for me. Thanks!

I know of 13 different types of birth controls, I have information on 11, some information on another one, and I found websites to help with the two I wasn't completely sure about.

Abstinence:
Effectiveness 99% against STD's, 100% against pregnancy
How it works : No sex until marriage (or just no sex)
Pros: No chance of pregnancy, only 1% chance of having an STD
Cons: A long wait
Cost: Free

Birth Control Pill:
Type:hormonal
Effectiveness: 97%-99% if used properly, not effective against STD's
How it works: horomones prevent ovulation
Pros: less chance of pregnancy, regulates period, helps w/ cramping, & prevents some cancers and cysts
Cons: doesn't prevent std's, cost, having to take it everyday at same time, complicated, and bad for smokers and people w/ high blood pressure
Cost: free at the health department, $15 insured, or $30 per pack per month

Depo-Provera:
Type:hormonal
Effectiveness: over 99%
How it works: horomone given in shot every 12 weeks, also prevents ovulation

How it works: male~made from laytex or polyurethane, &covers penis during intercourse. female~insterted into vagina to block cervix

Cons: can break, can be allergic
Cost: free at health department, or $7 for a 6-pack

I don't have time to finish this up, so ask me again to my inbox, and I'll give you information on the rest, for now I'll just give you the names of the other types that I know, and if you want you can google them, or ask another question and I'll finish up.
