will an ipod mini work on an hp ... and is there any special hookup needed to download songs ?

The iPod mini, like I think all iPods, can connect either via FireWire (iLink / IEEE 1394) or by a USB connection. Assuming your HP system has been manufactured after 1995, you likely have USB on it.
