Thewayitwas answered Monday January 24 2005, 7:06 pm: Well here I go..being I have many piercings myslef heres my speal...piercing anything yourslef from your ears to your tongue is a bad idea, specially if you dotn haev the right tools..When professionals pierce anything other than your ears they use what is called as a hollow needle..this is used to help prevent invention, scar tissue and a bump of access skin (like when people get their cartildge done with just a regular needle like at clairs or sumthing with a gun they get like a weird bump behind their ear becuase all the gun does is dislocate the flesh so that a ring can be put in its place..) anyway my pint is the hallow needle actually removes the skin for a smoother healing process.. doing your bellybutton yourself without a hallow needle could be really bad. Even if you did have a hallowneedle you dont know where certain nerves are in the abdoman and could really hurt yourself.. But you are a rebellious teen so my advice to you is if you really do end up doing it yourslef make sure you have sum sort of antibacterial substance like peroxide to sterilize whatever your using to pierce..oh and heres another thing..most belly button rings are 14 gauge (just incase you didnt know) so you would have to make the hole big enough to fit a normal belly button ring that should be made out of surgical steel or titanium to reduce the bodies allergic reaction to a forien object being jammed in it..This is for whether its done professionally for by yourslef-after its pierced you need to clean it every day with bactine and once in a while make a solution of Sea-salt and water and soak the peircing to get any thing that might have gotten into the piercing until its fully healed which could take up to 9 months..and to help reduce scar tissue vitimn E oil is a plus to dab around the peircing every couple of days..oh and once its peirced dont remove the original belly button ring for alteast 3-4 months to reduce re-tearing the skin starting to heal..well that concludes my stupid lecture sorry to make you read all that!! Hope I helped you tho! ;) [ Thewayitwas's advice column | Ask Thewayitwas A Question ]

Karen answered Sunday January 23 2005, 5:49 pm: Yup, you can pop a blood vessel or it can get infected. Before I got my belly button pierced professionally, I pierced mine a few times by myself. Well the last time I did it, I popped a blood vessel. I didn't even know that I did because I didn't feel anything until after I noticed that the area around my belly button was red. I did everything right but I still managed to do something wrong. DO NOT pierce your belly button by yourself. You could do something like I did. If your mom said you can't get it pierced, listen to her. My mom was the same way; she wouldn't let me get my belly button pierced. Well I made her change her mind by proving to her that I was responsible. I started helping around the house and doing well in school. Well I hope you follow my advice and not pierce your belly button yourself because there are a lot of consequences. I'm sorry that I told you my story but it goes with your question. Hope I helped :)
