Education Problems

Question Posted Sunday January 2 2005, 10:37 pm

Hey Draak.
I am 14 (Turning 15 March 9) I am home schooled though my mom doesn't teach me. I have plenty of school books but I don't do them because half of them I don't understand. I want to learn, I love learning but I have no drive with my mother teaching me. I know thats the reason because if I had someone else teaching I know I would do it for them, but for my mother its really why? She leaves the learning up to me. Tells me to go to her if I really want to learn. I just can't get myself to do that. My mother hates the school system. She is a teacher though she hasn't taught in the schools since I was born. I am a avid reader and love books. I have self taught myself to play the piano though I am not the best. I also take guitar and tap lessons. My peers often say I am very organized, I am very good at planning activity's. I would like to go to the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) I would like to become a Pastry Chef and have my own sweet shop. Thats my dream of about 4 years.
My mother is always saying that I will get my GED when I turn 16 which isn't that far away. I just don't think she relizes that 16 isn't a magic number and I won't be able to get my GED if I have had no Schooling. My mother taught me up until division and then she just kinda quit. I said I would do and I didn't and she never metioned it. When my mother does give me homework its things I have done a million times. I tell her and she says just do it. I have expressed my feelings to her about wanting to learn and that 16 isn't a magic number and she says we will get to it. That what she always says. My mother detests the school system and there is no convincing her. Trust me. I have tryed and tryed. Its waste of breath.

So my question to you is how do I get myself more motivated and excited about learning at home. I just do nothing everyday except for the computer, and I only go to advicenators. litterly.

Please your advice would be totally welcomed. I decided to ask you because give some of the best answers in my opinion.
You know who I am if you check so thankyou.
Sincerely
AG

First let me say that I'm sorry it took me so long to get to this. Secondly, I've never, personally, been home schooled. But from what I do know about home schooling, it sounds like you're mom isn't doing her job. She should be the one motivating you, since it's her expectations that you are trying to meet and your future. It sounds like it's your mom that needs motivating.

But I digress, no, 16 isn't a magic number. You aren't instantly going to know everything. As far as motivating yourself, I'd start by using my computer and going out to some school sites and looking around at their curriculum and study guides. There's lots of stuff out there to learn that you need, like algebra. You said you like to read, start reading, anything. Start making reports of all the books you read.

I can tell you, it probably won't be exciting. Even when going to a school it gets boring. Talk to your mom again, sit her down and tell her how you feel. But make sure you do it in an adult manner, meaning try not to whine to your mom about it, but try reasoning with her again. Tell her that you need structure in order to learn, tha you need new things to learn. If she's that worried about your education she'll realize she isn't enough or get motivated to help you achieve your dreams.

And that's what it's all about... your future. Is it important enough to fight for? I'm sure the answer is yes. So, you keep fighting. Keep fighting to learn.

I'm sorry I'm not much help. I just can't wrap my mind around why your mom, who detests the school system, but wants you to succeed so badly, won't assign you work to do. or find you the help that you need. But I hope the suggestions work and that you find the motivation that you need to succeed.
