Confused

Question Posted Thursday December 9 2004, 2:57 pm

I went to this unity day celebration last sunday in Carlisle Pennsylvania. There were two main speakers there one was from the government of pennsylvania he spoke about Bush and how he is trying to ammend the constitution against gay marriage. Another person was the president of Dickenson College who spoke about the same things. I was wondering in your opinion why would the president of the united states be against gay marriage if logically speaking it has nothing to do with the society rather it has to do with the key individuals going for this right. I mean we created the land of the free, which is supposed to represent freedom to all. But here is a man who supposidly believes in freedom yet wants to take it away. Bush or any other government official will never know what it is like to be different or poor or any of these things simply because they have the money and power to do as they will reguardless of societies limitations. How is he justified in societies eyes???

He is justifying his actions as if he is "saving the sanctity of marriage", since, of course, heterosexual people divorcing each other left and right hasn't already destroyed it. Bush clearly makes decisions with moral and religious implications despite the supposed separation of church and state within the US. Current politics are sadly following that trend, which clearly go against the teachings and original decisions of the "founding fathers" of the US.<br>

A close look at the society here in America shows a clear division over such issues, with the religious right conservative "retros" clearly against the thoughts of the more liberal socially progressive "metros". This will be an issue for years to come in the American government and society.
