Hello, this is selectopaque. I wanted to add something about the problem you've had with your dogs. The hacking sound could possibly be hairballs. It sounds strange for a dog to have hairballs, but I have seen it happen. Even if they aren't actually throwing anything up when it happens, they could still be swallowing a little too much hair when they clean themselves. Shih-Tzu's and Maltese don't shed very much because their fur is actually closer to human hair than dog fur, but Chihuahua's will shed more like a normal dog. Even if you have a short haired Chihuahua he/she could still be hacking up small bits of hair. My childhood dog is 14-15 years old now and has been doing what you described pretty much her whole life. The Vet's have never said anything about it, and she has never had a serious problem with it. I always assumed she ate too fast, drank too fast, or simply had a tickle in her throat.
If it really worrys you then you should definately call a Vet. They would be able to tell you more.
I also wanted to mention another dog to you. I read about this dog last night while at work and they seem very friendly and very easily trained. It's called a Bolognese. They're a small dog related to the Bichon Frise and the Havanese. They are supposed to get along very well with other dogs and be very good with obedience training.
I've never heard of a bolognese, so I looked it up and it's just adorable! I especially like them with shorter hair, that's so cute :D Thanks again . I think I'll get another ofor all of the dogs you've mentionedne around christmas time. Each one of my three dogs has a different personality so it's good to know that adding a new one might not make them jealous. They could be jealous, but i'm sure within time they'll get closer with the dog. Thank you!
Love,
