Splitting up My sister(47yrs) has been living with her "common-law" for 14 years. she worked, until he told her to stop. She used her pension payout to buy a car, which has since been sold. He bought her another car, but registered it in his name. She has now left him. Does she have any claims to him for financial assistance etc.?

'Common law' marrages aren't recognised as being leagal anywhere that I know of, so I don't think she would be entitled to anything if it's not in her name. But she might want to check out the law in her area first, or talk to a lawyer of some kind.
Good Luck ]
It all depends on the laws of the state that they were living in at the time of the seperation. Some states count common-law as married, some don't. If they do count it as marriage, even then the rules vary from state to state as to who gets what when the separation happens. You'd have to contact that state for it's rules and regulations. Sorry I couldn't help more than that and good luck to your sister for me. ]
