My sister(47yrs) has been living with her "common-law" for 14 years. she worked, until he told her to stop. She used her pension payout to buy a car, which has since been sold. He bought her another car, but registered it in his name. She has now left him. Does she have any claims to him for financial assistance etc.?
Draak answered Monday October 18 2004, 3:27 pm: It all depends on the laws of the state that they were living in at the time of the seperation. Some states count common-law as married, some don't. If they do count it as marriage, even then the rules vary from state to state as to who gets what when the separation happens. You'd have to contact that state for it's rules and regulations. Sorry I couldn't help more than that and good luck to your sister for me. [ Draak's advice column | Ask Draak A Question ]
