Pull all your hair up as if to put it in a ponytail, take an elastic and wrap it around your hair (same as a ponytail). Before wrapping the elastic around for the LAST time, grab the rest of your hair also and wrap it in... well - messy.
BeautifulLiarMM answered Monday September 27 2004, 4:35 pm: all I do is brush my hair so it's fluffy and then pull it back (and if it has bumps on the top thats a good thing)so then i just put in in a regualr bun but i just mess the bun up with my hands then get another hair-tie and wrap it around the new messy bun
XxRockon answered Monday September 27 2004, 4:09 pm: this is how i do it atleast..bend down so all ur hair is in front of you then gather it into a ponytail but don't put the tie around it. Then put the tie on the bottom part of the pony tail and then just put it on half way so its a bun. Sorry if its not the best directions, its sorta hard to explain online but i hope i helped :) [ XxRockon's advice column | Ask XxRockon A Question ]

Not brushing is big mistake for most girls trying to obtain the "cute" look. If your just pulling your hair back to go jogging or something it isn't as important, but if your going to prom, skipping this step can ruin the look.
2- Use any type of elastic band (avoid rubber bands, they cause hair breakage, knots, and split ends if not carefully removed.) My favorite are the Goody bands with no metal clasp. If desparate you can use anything really (I'm using a plastic zip tie at the moment, and I've been known to use Chop Sticks, Pens, Shoe Laces & Soft plastic bracelets.)
Short hair:
3- You will need to pull your hair through the band at least three times, On the first time, pull hair through like a normal pony tail, then, pull it back through half way, creating a small loop. (here you can get creative, pulling loose ends throught the loop and what not, but thats for you to create and personalize if you wish, not necessary.) Finally, double the loop over and secure with the band. To give your hair the funky loose ends, you have to double the loop so the loose ends stick out 1-2 inches. You may have to practic a bit, but its easy to catch on and personalize. No two messy buns are alike really.
Long hair:
3- Personally I think long hair makes better messy buns, just because it makes a fuller bun, and gives you more to work with. You follow the same basic steps as the short hair, but on the first pull, don't pull your hair through the whole way. When you pull your hair through the second time, twist it around some, pulling it through half way again (not the full length, half of the second length.) repeat these steps until you get your full lenght into the bun. Don't make the bun as tight as possible, because then you lose the messy-ness of a loose bun.
You can add accessories if you like. If you are going to a luau or summer party you can wrap a lei around your bun, or you can stick flowers into it by the stems. It's all about you & your style, you gotta personalize it!
