Do you think its right to "lay off" guys and girls while I start off Sophmore year? Like not going out with any guys or girls till I'm actually caught up with my work, and I have a grip on life?

That's perfectly fine. The start of a new school year can be overwhelming, and it's normal to want to be able to breathe and get a good handle on things. If that is the only reason you are asking for a break, let them know this. However, if you discover you're much happier without being committed to them, you should stay that way.
