What headboards are good for the civil war era.

try a deep mahogany colored one
or a wooden old beaten kind

Dark wood. Very very dark. Lots of intricate details, and make sure its very think and heavy. Floral is a nice touch.

The Civil War was around the Victorian era, so anything that looks Victorian works for that era. Ornately carved, dark wood usually fits in the best. Look for furniture at used furniture stores, antique stores, and flea markets.
