It is when the boy's reproductory system is readying itself by stiffening to ejaculate some semen. This usually happens after he has been sexually stimulated but it can happen as just a part of growing up. He should not be at all embarassed, but also consoled to know that his embarassment causes a neuronic reaction which will cause the normality to be restored. If you wish to help him, coach him and tell him it is perfectly normal, and that some boys are even proud of their erections.
