Try Avix or Linux those are best programs, But before we can give you the best information we need to know what you are currently running, how many people are connected or will be connect to the Lan and what are the major purposes.

I have a fileserver at home, dishing out the files through samba running on a Linux box. Little customization was needed, and I did so on older hardware with a new, big-ass hard drive. I have had 5 people accessing it simultaneously and never had a problem.

Now, I'm not running any kind of hardware or software raid, but one day (given time and money), I'll mess around with that.

I cannot tell what sort of LAN you are running... is it for a company? A large or small group of people?

There are a billion different ways you could go about implementing a solution to this, but without knowing your requirements, I can't really give you a concrete answer.
