Comrade answered Tuesday September 2 2008, 5:09 pm: They're adults and they make their own choices. There's little you can do to MAKE them stop smoking. All you can do is make your stance known and hope they cooperate with you.
If you're that concerned about your health/safety, leave the room when they start smoking, go outside, etc.
On a slightly unrelated note, my dad used to smoke when I was a kid. He stopped when I told him "Dad, when I grow up I want to be just like you" as he was smoking. I was 4 or 5 at the time, so I had no idea what I was saying, but it saddened him enough to get him to quit. If your parents care about that kind of thing, that may work with them too. Tell them that if they have to smoke to please don't smoke around you because then you're going to smell like smoke ALL day. Tell them that secondhand smoke is a lot worse than regular smoking. They should be a little considerate if you talk to them about it. [ LiLMAMAx's advice column | Ask LiLMAMAx A Question ]
