What does wifi enabled mean?

Question Posted Monday March 16 2015, 12:06 pm

I'm planing to get a tablet and the one I plan to get says wifi enabled? What does that mean? Does that mean I can use wifi anywhere for free or would I have to sign a plan? And if so, how much would unlimited wireless wifi cost?

If your device is wifi enabled, that basically means it is set up to access wifi networks. It should recognize the existence of networks that are in range but you will only be able to access the ones that are public or non-secured.

For example, many coffee shops and restaurants and some retail stores have publicly accessible wifi. Some residential networks are unsecured and thus technically accessible but it's an issue of ethics because you are feeding off of someone else's network that they are paying for. For that reason, you are probably best to avoid them.

So while wifi, and especially the free kind, doesn't exist everywhere, it is available in many places. If you want to have Internet access readily available anywhere that it possibly can be, you will need to sign up for a plan, mostly likely through a cell phone company and possibly a cable provider.

Prices vary a lot depending upon where you live and what providers are in that area of the world.

Wifi enabled means you can use wifi at free locations such as public places mcdonalds, libraries etc.., your home network you can even use your hotspot from your cell phone which will take from your data plan if you do not have unlimited data but pretty much this means your tablet can be on the go and no plan is necessary when you get one with a sim such as the free ones cell providers give they alot of them require a 2 year contract, activation fee, monthly access fees, and early termination fees if you cancel.

wifi enabled is better and cheaper!!! :) enjoy your tablet

Absolutely! It means that the tablet can connect to the Internet for free when there's a local Wi-Fi network connection available. No plan is necessary.
