about

My name is Elly and I am 18 years old. I live in Michigan and I graduated High School in '07. I'm currently attending a great college, but I'm home for the summer. It's too nice outside to sit on the computer all day, so I might not be as active on here as I would like.

I guess a good way to describe me is experienced. I've discovered a lot about life and I can't wait to discover more... while having fun at the same time of course! ...BUT, like everyone, I have experienced things in life that I rather wish I hadn't. And I also feel that those bad experiences qualify me to help others with this column.

I have been in a serious relationship for over two and a half years now. I personally know that love is a difficult thing to nurture. It takes a lot of work. Life is NOT a fairytale where two people can simply love each other and everything will just fall into place. It doesn't work like that in the real world.

People on Advicenators are starting to disappoint me. Everyone says "ooh I want to help! I've experienced EVERYTHING!" Yet, I can't tell you how many questions I see with answers like "you could have googled that" or "we're not going to do your homework" or "I'm so sick of 'wow does he like me?!' questions." I used to sort of be like that, but now I realize how hypocritical that is. If I know the answer to a question, I will answer to the best of my ability without making you feel stupid for asking it in the first place. Advicenators is going to turn into a pretty nasty place if people just keep brushing off questions like that.

Rate or don't rate. I really don't care. But don't give me a 1 just because I tell you something you don't want to hear. Go to your mom for advice if you want sugarcoated answers.

I can give excellent advice on:
relationships/sex
friendship
family issues
anything about animals (i worked at a vet for several years)

I found a dog a few days ago in my neighborhood and I tried walking around trying to find her owner and I couldn't so she stayed all night in front of my house. I didn't tie her up or anything she willlingly stayed and the next day I found her owner who lives just a few houses down from me and the dog keeps coming back to my house and sits on the front portch. Last night I found her again and put her in their fenced back yard but she must crawl under it and get out because when I was walking home she came back out. I think she likes me so much because I fed her and gave her lots of attention before I returned her and she likes me a lot more than her home. What sould I do to keep her from returning. Her owners knowd when she leaves she comes straight to my house but THEY don't come get her I take her to them and she is hesitant about it.

Insist that your neighbors lock her up better. The dog is their responsibility; not yours. If she keeps wandering to your house, call the police and let them know what's going on. The dog could easily get hit by a car if the owners don't take the extra precautions to stop her from getting out.

BUT we're hoping things won't go that far. Have a serious talk with your neighbors and that you're sick of dealing with their responsibilities. You can be perfectly polite about it. Point out the dangers of letting their dog wander like that.

Hello my name is samantha Hancock,
I am a Grade 12 student at Bowmanville High School.
I have been assigned an essay about the career you are pursuing after high school and we have to give an interview to someone. Since I don't know a Veterinary Technician I have to e-mail someone and ask them some questions.
So if you could possibly answer these or get someone to answer these it would hep me out largely!

Thank you in advance, Samantha

1What first interested you in this career?
2. What college did you attend?>
3. What was the most interesting thing you learned?
4. What is the best thing about your job?
5 What is the worst thing about your job?
6. How was finding a job after finishing school?
7. What is your favorite animal to work with?
8. What is the funniest thing that has happened to you while working?
9. Do you specialize in any certain animal?
10.Do you have any advice for someone looking into this career?

Your best bet would be to call your local vet and ask if any of their technicians would be willing to help you out with a five minute interview. Even offer to exchange an email address with one of the vet techs so it would be more convenient for them. As long as they know it's for a school project, I'm sure there is a vet office in your area that would be willing to help.

I have always wanted a pet ferret. I am so close to buying one but I need some background on the animal before I make such a big purchase. I know close to nothing about pet ferrets. Please tell me anything and everything you know about taking care of a pet ferret. How often do they need shots? What if they bite? How often should they have a bath? Plus all the other things I do NOT know about this animal. Please help me! Thank you!

http://exoticpets.about.com/od/ferretcare/Pet_Ferret_Care_and_Health_Information.htm

That's a really good web site. It should provide you all you need to know.

Keep in mind that ferrets are very high maintenance. Biting will very likely be a problem, but the best thing for you to do is to make sure your hands don't smell like food when you hold it. I have been bitten by an adult ferret and it really doesn't hurt.

Keep in mind that ferrets smell kind of bad. But that is part of the natural oils in their skin. Bathing it often usually doesn't help, as the skin is constantly secreting oil.

Nevertheless, ferrets can be fun and affectionate animals and I'm sure you will be a great owner as long as you read through that web site I gave you. :)

I have a boston terrier that's about 5 years old, and a new kitten. And well, my dog likes to get into the cat litter box, and eat the uhm...dung. =/ and my mother knew a woman that her dog use to do that, and it ended up getting liver cancer. and we can't move the litter box..and i was wondering if they made something to like...spray on the litter pan, so the dog wouldn't go near it?

or something, anything really...

because i really don't want my dog to die. =[

Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any such spray. You're going to have to do some strict training.

Try to keep the litter box in an area where the kitten can access it, but it can still be under close watch. Every time you catch your dog getting into it, pull him out and give him a firm "NO." If that doesn't get you anywhere, keep telling him "NO" but then try spritzing water in his face. I know that sounds mean, but it's just water and it will help him to get the point.

When you kitten gets bigger and understands how to use the litter box properly, you should keep it in a high place where only the cat can get to it.

My dog is very old, around 17, and I recently noticed that the white of his eyes has red veins (beyond the norm), it seems pretty red.

He has cataracts (sp?), but otherwise is in good health and has a good appetite. His muscles are weak, he's deteriorating (we're thinking of when to put him to sleep :( :(

But I was wondering if the red eyes/veiny eyes is a real cause of concern, or just a sign of old age?

My dog had them too. I am uncertain as to whether or not it is a sign of old age, but I can tell you it is nothing to be worried about.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're thinking of putting him down. I just went through that a year ago and it still pains me to think about it. If you need someone to talk to, I'm here.

do the first thing baby animals see (living?) they perceive as their mother? like for wild animals.. what if you stumble upon a nest and just then an egg cracked and the baby saw you? hmm but then dont babies not see yet bc their eyelids are closed? so how does this all work?

That's not always true. Basically, whoever feeds the baby animal is probably who they are going to consider to be a mother figure. Food and shelter, as an instinct, are their first and only priorities.

15/f

so about 2 weeks ago I saw a dog walking down the street at about 2:30 in the morning. I went over to see her, and realized that she was REALLY REALLY skinny. So me my mom and dad gave her a bunch of food and water, she ate and drank it all. The next day the Animal Protective league Came to get her to give her any medication ect. she needed to get her better. They said she was 2years old and had been on the streets for a while. They also said she was an abused dog. They could tell by the way she was acting around people. But she is a VERY sweet dog. They told us she was a mix between a Coon dog and a Basset hound.

They said that we could be her ( my dad named her sara) foster family, meaning we can have her at our house to take care of her until they find a pernament home for her (i hope we adopt her), so we are her foster family now.

At first Sara went to the door when she had go to the bathroom. But yesterday she went pea on my carpet in my room,I knew it was her because I caught her doing it, then she bolted out of the room. I thought, "well maybe one of the other dogs that we have went the a long time ago and we didn't clean it up well enough". I said "NOOOO" really sternly to her a couple of times and showed her it by putting her nose close to it so she would know what she did. So, after I showed her it, I held her face up to mine and said, "NOO" sternly to her, I could see the fear in her eyes. I did NOT hit her. I thought she was potty trained .... the first 5 days went so well she was getting along with the other dogs and was starting to come out of her shell, she was playing and was always happy to see us.

So today it was raining in the morning and Sara REFUSED to get wet, so we had to wait till later to take her out. My dad did when it stopped raining but Sara still didn't go. He told me to take her out later. So I cooked some speghetti and ate. When I came down for about the 10th time between eating and cooking to check on her I smelled something, and it smelled like poop. I went in my room and there it was. I got Sara and did the same thing to her that i did when she went pea in my room. I cleaned it up and took her outside. She went pea. Then she decieded to go upsairs for the first time. Which if OK. Well I had just got done taking her out and she pead on the carpet upstairs!!!! I did the same thing agian, like I had done when she went in my room.

I did NOT tell my mom she has done all this either.

So is Sara going to hate me now, because she was abused, but I had to teach her that she can't go in the house. Otherwise my mom will send her back to the Animal Protection League. And I REALLY love her. (I'm an animal lover). Is Sara not going to be excited to see me anymore? Is she going to be afaid of me? I didn't hit her, so will she be ok? I want her to love me!?!

Please help...thank you SOOO much!!!

Just remember that your dog is in a new and strange place and she will act strange for awhile until she can get used to her new surroundings. There was nothing wrong with the way you punished her, just make sure that you only punish her when you actually catch her in the act. If you find the pee later and then punish her, she won't understand.

Also make sure to give her lots of praise when she does go outside where she is supposed to.

I'm sure that she will get over this habit, it might just take some time. Try and be patient, and maybe take her outside more often than you normally would to help her get used to it.

I don't think she will hate you at all. She's still learning about you and your family and she probably just isn't sure about you yet. Just give it time.

Just a tip, if you really want her to like you, make sure you're the one that feeds her everyday and she'll love you. :)

I have a 2 1/2 year old wire fox terrier.
Lately he's been scratching his face a lot, especially around his eyes and snout, until the skin turns red and sometimes starts to bleed. I have no idea why he does this or what to do to make him stop. He doesn't have fleas and it's not allergies because hes received allergy shots, and also takes allergy pills once a week. My mom thought it could be that his hair was getting too long, but we took him for a haircut and he still does it. Does anyone have an idea why he does this?

It could be a large number of things. Dry skin, bug bites, a rash, etc. I highly recommend taking him to the vet and getting it checked out. I also suggest in getting an e-collar for him to prevent him from scratching anymore.

I have two chinchillas and they had two babies. we brought them all to vet to be sure that they were healthy. after the babies came we just had to get our male chinchilla fixed. he got through the surgery ok but then we noticed he wouldnt move his leg and his tail was bleeding.

The vet told us he was probably just sore and we should just wait and see. in the morning my mom found him laying in the cage... dead=(. we were all upset and we now found out that one baby is a girl... and one is a boy. Im so worried. my mom told me either we have to get him fixed, or he will have to be separated from the mom and baby girl.

Its scary but i was reading about fixing them and it said that most chins do make it out of being fixed just fine. Should we take the chance and get the baby boy fixed too?

Yes, go ahead and get the baby boy fixed, but take him to another vet office. That vet had absolutely no idea what they were doing and they were probably lazy for not looking into taking better care of your chinchilla.

After you get the boy fixed, keep as close an eye on him as possible. If he acts strange in anyway or bleeds even a tiny bit, bring him right back to the vet to get him checked out. That way, they can catch any problems early on and help him get better.

Since the chinchilla is a baby, I doubt you'll be able to get him fixed right away. Talk to your vet about a good time to take care of that.

Hope everything goes okay!

Yeah so I put my goldfish in with my bigger fish and the bigger fish was chasing my goldfish. I figured it wouldnt hurt because he couldnt get him. But now my goldfish's tail is all torn up from the bigger fish biting it. Will the tail repair itself? Will it grow more cells so it wont be torn? Or will it be torn forever?

That's happened to me before.I had this big goldfish and a beta. The goldfish attacked the beta (weird I know) and his tail got ripped up. I put him in a seperate bowl and his tail is still torn, but he can swim just fine.

Your fish's tail will most likely be torn forever.

I just learned that my dog of twelve who is a chocolate lab is going to be put to sleep. My mom died when i was younger, and he was like my memory of herr.. she loved that dogg. I wanna spend my last few days with him doing something.. but he has cancer. It hurts for him to walk, and he won't eat. I don't know what to do. I haven't been myself.. and i don't like that.. what else should i do?
thanks.

Just be in the same room with him for a day. Curl up on the floor next to him. Give him hugs and kisses and tell him you love him. Mourning a dog is the absolute hardest thing to go through. It's important to know that it's okay to cry about it and talk about it when you need to. You'll feel a lot better. I have experienced losing a dog many times. If you need to talk about it with someone, I am here.

I had this cat skipper for a long time. she is 18 years old, very old getting thin, oilly fur, hard time eating hard food. but lately i saw blood on her poo, and sometimes i saw a blood stop in my bathroom, i whipe it up and it look like a gooy blood stuff??? so whats the matter with her? i know i show go to the vet, but i would like to know what you might think what it is cause you put on your advic page that you been working as a vet. so any idea?

I don't know exactly what's wrong with your cat. It could be a large number of things due to her old age. She might have had a small tear in her anus due to a large piece of stool, she might have a tear in her bladder, causing her to bleed from that area, she might have an internal parasite, she could even have cancer. It's hard for me to tell.

Bleeding is a serious thing, esp. for a cat her age, and you need to get her into a doctor right away.

So I have a 1 year old German Shepherd. I love him to death, except, he bites. A lot. And it hurts. :(

Thing is, my brother & dad LET him bite them, so then the dog thinks he can go around biting me, my sister, my mom sometimes, and even my friends.

I've told my brother & dad to STOP letting him bite, but he's just so used to doing it that he won't stop!!!

My dog could be as sweet as pie, but the next minute, he'll start biting. :( It's so sad.

So, what should I do...? Is there anything I COULD do? [Besides taking him to the vet. We don't have any time WHATSOEVER to bring him]

A good way to stop biting is, obviously, to firmly push him away and tell him NO. Whenever you play with him and he doesn't bite, tell him his a good boy over and over. Another thing that works, and I was told this by a professional, is to get a spray bottle with water and spray him with water in the face twice whenever he bites you. It will annoy him and he will learn that when he bites, he gets sprayed and he will be less likely to do it.

My dog has a trouble with biting,he is just a puppy, and he is only play biting but i dont want him to get used to biting, so what do i do?

Everytime he tries to bite you, firmly push him away and say NO. If that doesn't work, get a small spray bottle and spritz him in the face with water every time he bites. That will annoy him and teach him that it's bad to bite (I have been told this by a professional dog-trainer and have done this with my pets. It works.). In the meantime, make sure he has lots of toys to play with and chew on so he won't get distracted with fingers. Remember, puppies usually bite because they are teething and it hurts them.
