i'm not sure if any other cities [or towns, as the one i'm in] do this, but every friday night at midnight at a local cinema, a theater company puts on the rocky horror picture show. one of my best friends goes almost every week, and this friday we're going. it's always themed, and everyone always dressed really provocativel/slutty. but other than that, i don't really know what it is. is it an actual show, like a play production, or is it a movie [although i know its based on the movies], or what. if anyone has any idea, that would be helpful (: (link)
It could either be the stage production or the movie... The movie is about a transvestite alien who does all this weird stuff to people and like creates people...

It's a good movie though. I love it.

It was an old tradition for people to go and see the movie like all the time and they'd dress up as characters from the movie and they had a lot of other rituals that they'd do...

have fun

I want to be an actress but the problem is I cant sing. I'm not so sure what to do. And usually to act you also need a little singing skill. Any advice? Also I'm not aloud to take singing lessons I already take ot many dance classes. Any acting tips also? thanks!!!!!=] (link)
It depends on what kind of acting you're planning on going into.

For film/tv acting you usually don't need any talent- just a pretty face and you have to be able to read! (no offense or anything)

for acting in straight plays (not musicals) there really is not any singing skill needed, you just have to be a good actress.

but for musicals on the other hand, you do need a heck of a lot of singing skill.

so the first two types of acting would be fine for you as long as you can act!

:)

My town(and school) has a play/musical every year and i was in one school musical. i am 14. I want to be in the towns musical but i am really shy and can't like sing infront of people(adition involes this)....I ask for a 'non-singing' part but then i get a part with little to no words or spoken parts. I am not sure what i can do to boost my cofidence!!!!
Help!!! (link)
If you want to audition, then DO IT. Overcome your fear. Don't let it stop you from doing what you want.

This is all you need to know before an audition.

1. KNOW YOUR SONG. backwards and forwards.
2. smile and look pleasant and not nervous when you go up to sing for the artistic team.
3. PROJECT YOUR VOICE! Sing loudly.
4. Assure yourself that you can do it.

i hope i helped.

just go to the audition! After you do it you'll be like "oh i wonder why i was ever so afraid..."

it'll seem like nothing after it's over- believe me i've been to more auditions than i can remember... so i'm not lying to you haha.

SO i'm in a play in this little theater. It's snow white and i'm the evil witch. Also i'm 13. My mom said something to me yesterday that got me thinking. She said "you never know if talent scouts are watching you , i hear the come to little places like that, so try your best". So I started wondering, what is that "thing" or "things" that make a talent scout go up to someone and tell them they have the potential to be professional? It can't just be that you are a good actress/ actor cause alot of kids I seen are and no talent scout contacted them. So what is it? If you aren't involved in acting can you please not answer this? Thanks. (link)
there isn't really one specific "thing" that talent scouts look for... (by the way the chances of a talent scout coming to a small community theater are very VERY slim, like next to nothing- chances are your mom just said that to make you try really hard)

the two other answers were correct, but to be a stage actress these are the things you need:
1. You must be very, very well-spoken. (don't slur your speech, project, and annunciate)
2. A lot of initiative, drive, and focus.
3. you must be able to handle a TON of rejection.
4. you have to have passion. you must be so passionate about theater that the question "should i be an actor?" is not even in your mind.

so don't expect that a talent scout is coming to your performance... I mean just don't get your hopes up. But it's fine to keep that idea in the back of your mind.

i hope i helped.

i've been very involved in theater for a long time, so feel free to ask me anything else. :)

I'm in the mood to watch some really romantic movies, so if you can list any besides the Notebook or Titanic, I'll be soooo grateful! (link)
phantom of the opera is really romantic. so is funny girl...

Does anyone know how to achieve great turnout for ballet? (link)
Turnout is all about stretching the hip flexors. There is no easy way to do it- you have to do the following stretches daily: Sit on the floor with your feet facing each other so that your legs make a diamond shape (you probably already know this one) and gradually try to push your knees closer to the floor/put your face on your feet.

Also make the same shape with your legs only be on your stomach so your knees are on the floor. Then try to pull your feet closer to it.

This one is harder:
Also sit with both of your legs in that position where you're sort of kneeling only one leg is sort of out to the side and then the other leg is under the other one- only take the leg that's farthest away from you out farther so it makes a 90 degree angle and do the same thing with the other one so the right foot is touching the left knee. (if that makes sense- that was the best way i could describe it)

after you do these for a while you will notice your turnout has greatly increased.

Just WHATEVER YOU DO- don't try to overextend your hip flexors in a first position (or any position) by turning out your feet wider than they can naturally go. You'll become injured and then you'll never be able to dance again. (turnout must come from the WHOLE LEG- not just feet.)

good luck!

i've been in ballet for quite some time so feel free to ask me any other questions you might have!

I have to perform a dramatic monolouge. I have never done it before although I'm ready to take on the challenge. Please give me tips to stay calm. I sing at my church, so I am use to a big crowd. PLEASE HELP ASAP!! (link)
find a good monolouge in a monolouge book, memorize it, and then possibly get someone to watch you- like an acting coach in your area if you know of any.

good luck

before you go into the audition room to audition for a play at my high school, you are given your scene, so you can practice with the other people who have also been assigned that scene. you probably have anywhere from 5-15 minutes to practice. when practicing, is it better to do your part EXACTLY how you plan to do it in the room, or is it better to hold back a little bit, until you get into the room. the reason i ask this is because i have found that if you practice the scene how you plan to really do it, then the other people auditioning sometimes sort of "steal" the way you are performing it. especialy if you are being really wacky characters (ex. really happy, angy, sad, mad, silly, etc.). also, if the persons not a very good actor, you feel out of place acting to your full potential while practicing. however, obviously the point of practicing is so you can practice, so if you don't practice the way you plan to audition, you may mess it up when you go to audition. also, would it be mean to not really do it the way you plan to, until you actually go to audition (would it be to mean/shocking to the person you are auditioning with)? what is the best way to handle this situation of practicing with others? it would be nice to hear from someone who has been to auditions before, so i can get an opinion of what you do (or would do). thank you! (link)
don't give your best performance when you're practicing- like don't try to project or anything until you get into the audition room. Just make sure you know how you will do it.

wear should i send audition tapes for young girls (13)?? What is the address of Broadway auditioning, any dancing academies, etc. I dont have any idea where to look. anything will help. thanks!
~EAS (link)
send it to walnut hill school of the arts if you're looking for a ballet summer program/boarding school.

www.walnuthillarts.org

but it really depends on what you're looking for. there are several camps/boarding schools/dance schools that require audition tapes.

google "summer dance programs" or "dance boarding schools" and see what comes up. hope this helps.

So I have been singing for years. You know.. for fun? Nothing serious so I don't think I'm a good singer.

My friend, I always thought had a better singing voice & she's in theater .. gets the lead parts and singing parts.

So I go to her for advice about singing and I told her how great she was at it.

Well, she sang something for me & sent it to me in a wav.

And it isn't her best singing.. at all.. she was out of tune and i dont know how to respond to her. it's not her best work.. but she wants an answer.

I can send you the link and maybe you can come up with something nice but helpful to say ?

it's not horrible.. i just don't know how to say that needs some work on it.. because I'm not a great singer. I'm a bit flat so.. if I tell her or imply how she's not that great.. it would be kinda stupid? Because I'm no better than her.

Help?
She's going to sing at her theater but i don't want her to embarrass herself or get hurt.. (link)
Don't say anything negative about it unless she was off-key for the WHOLE song. I think it's okay to mention it was good exept for being off-pitch. Or you could say "maybe it's not the best song for your voice."

Hi. My theatre company is putting on a production of "My Fair Lady" and the auditions are really soon. I want to try out for Henry Higgins or Col. Pickering, but I need to learn an english accent. Can anyone help? (link)
Try watching Harry Potter movies and imitating the british accents on there.

My school's choir is doing a cabaret show and I have a solo in the song "Popular" from the play Wicked. I can sing the solo very well but I have a problem with singing infront of my class. I can sing infront of other people just not infront of the class. I need to practice with everyone so I can get it down perfectly. So, my question is... How do I get rid of my nerves or atleast be able to sing without a shakey voice? I try to tell myself they will judge me no matter how I sound but it doesn't seem to help. (link)
Nervousness is usually caused by lack of confidence in your own abilities- so I think that possibly recording yourself singing the solo, anylizing your sound, and making improvements could help a lot. And plus, your choral director most likely gave you this solo for a good reason, he or she probably believes that you can sing it better than anyone else could. Also, practicing it in front of a mirror can help a lot. Practice, practice, practice until it becomes second nature. And also, you can relax because you've already gotten the part, you don't have to audition again.

Another thing is that (in the grand scheme of things) it doesn't really matter what your peers think of your singing, it only matters what your choral director thinks. If he or she thinks you're doing it well, then you are! Just laugh to yourself if you hear anyone gossiping about your performance. Chances are, they're probably just jealous! Good luck! :)
