my moms best friends son is 14/m (hes going into 9th grade) and we went to dinner with them tonight and he was really quiet and while all the adults were talking and all the kids were running around he picked up his knife and started kinda sawing at the back of his hand and the second he saw that i saw what he was doing, he stopped. and later that night he asked if he could walk home to practice his guitar before they all got home (we are neighbors and we all live close to where we were having dinner but not close enough that most people would walk home right before a big thunderstorm) and when his dad said that they were all going home anyway he looked kind of mad. so i guess i have two questions, can you cut the back of your hand (like cutting suicide wise) and should i be worried about him like what should i do
please answer me really soon because if something happened we would all be heartbroken
and p.s. his mom said that he was never upfront snotty, but he never likes going places with his family and stuff and that he was doing well that night. does that mean anything?

you have every right to be worried, and trust me this is one good question. First of all, you can cut anywhere. One common misconception is that cutters only cut their wrists. Most cutters cut in inconspicuous places such as their arms, wrists, thighs, stomach, etc... I think he obviously has a cutting problem. I'm not sure if you can commit suicide by cutting the back of your hand since their aren't MAJOR veins like the wrist. Look at the back of your hand, do you notice some fairly large veins? I do, and I think that entitles you to every right to be worried. This is a serious matter and I know that you don't what to over react to something possibly stupid or a misunderstanding, but this is life or death situation. You need to tell your parents what you saw, or his parents. An adult needs to know. You really cant do this for him but he really needs therapy, I dont know if you ever talk to him but if he has a cutting problem he can always wear a rubber band and snap it against his skin every time he has the urge. Anyways most likely if your worried it's something big. Tell your parents or maybe even his, I dont want you to regret not telling anyone if he was to do something worth. You'll be doing the right thing. And if he gets help what's the worse that can happen? He'll still be alive? Good luck sweetie, and don't be afraid to tell. I'm really glad you're concerned for him!
