Hey, T'is me, Mordak from spacefem. I wanna know where i should get my next piercing. I have 8 in my ears, 6 in my lieft, 2 in my right, and an eyebrow ring in my left eyebrow. So, where should i next bung a hole?? (link)
|
Obviously somewhere on the right side of your body before you become unbalanced and start tipping to the left :)
Symmetrical eyebrow piercings seem a little odd... so right ear, maybe?

Can you buy birth control pills over the counter or do I need a doctor's prescription before I can get it? (link)
|
I think it's usually a prescription thing, so you'll need to speak to a doctor to help assess what you need.

How do I make myself look more attractive to potential employers? (link)

Dress just a tad dressier than the people already working there for the interview... this probably means wandering by the workplace before the interview... it also means you'll be able to work out where the workplace is, how long it takes to get there, etc.
Maybe you mean in general though...
-a good portfolio in the case of creative jobs,
-some volunteer work (in a related area is always a bonus, but if there's an opportunity or something you already do, stay with that),
-as much related work with happy bosses (i.e. good résumé content and references) as you can get (yeah, chicken and egg thing)
-a meticulously perfect résumé and cover letter (adjust to suit employer)
-for jobs requiring academic training, a solid transcript with some evidence of outside interests
-a positive, realistic attitude and pleasant bearing
-an informed idea of why you're just what the employer needs (specific to each employer)
-a measured dose of dumb luck

he talks, not directly to me. . and he syas dumb things and it just is hard to explain... u wouldnt understand ur not in my posiion (link)
|
I think this is a response to someone's answer to a previous question... it's being broadcast to everybody though.
You might try posing it directly to the person who's not understanding (then again, it's likely none of us do)... or even seeing if they have a website or e-mail which you can use to start a conversation/correspondence. Many columnists make their e-mail available, the worst that might happen is you'll be considered spam.

I got fired from my job about three years ago. It was really a great job and it was an exempt position too. I was using drugs at that time and it affected my performance and I was missing a lot of days worked. It was kind of like an eye opener for me when I got fired and I've been drug free since then. I had three little kids so I decided that it would be best if I stayed home with the kids during the day and I took a part time job at night. It's been this way for three years. Now that my youngest kid is also in school, I think that I am ready to work full time again. My dilema is I don't know what to say when asked on a job interview why I left my last full time job. I can't say I got fired because they wouldn't hire me. What do you think would the best response be? (link)
|
"I was dismissed because I wasn't meeting expectations" might be a good start, followed by "I missed a lot of days due to some problems I'd rather not talk about, but those problems are behind me".
If they press the issue, it's up to you the level of detail you want to provide, but this allows you a modicum of privacy without being dishonest. Some places consider drug addiction a disease, and your health status is considered not-a-grounds-for-discrimination in some places.
If you have a criminal record from your earlier days, that may be an issue (again depending on where you are and what you want to do), you may need to address that depending on the job. Otherwise, you'll need an understanding employer, but if you essentially say you were a wreck back then and you're better now, at least you're disclosing enough that your past makes sense.

My boyfriend calls himself a Christian but doesn't go to church. I'm not a religious fanatic or anything, actually I'm pretty liberal and my church is too, but he's still really reluctant to go to church with me. He seems to really dislike organized religion. I understand where he's coming from, but he won't even give my church a chance... we're really cool. I'd love it if he'd go to church with me, I think it'd be fun, and frankly it freaks me out that he's so afraid to try new things. What do you think? (link)
|
What snarfism said: ask once, leave it at that. Maybe his unwillingness is a big problem for you, in which case it might be a sign of more problems to come... or maybe you don't mind so much. Some people have big issues with organized religion (or politics, or going to drag shows, or whatever) and never mind getting those horses to drink, good luck leading them to water.
If it really worries you that he's unwilling (or even if it doesn't), and you haven't had a chance yet, maybe try setting aside a few hours someplace quiet and swapping life stories (I've tended to do it over food and/or coffee, or walking in the rain... be sure to bring an umbrella...). You find out a lot from the big overviews and you may be able to put all this in perspective.

Can I get sick from licking all the envelopes from my christmas cards to seal them? I know I could use a sponge and all that but that's just not as fun... I feel like licking them gives a more personal touch. Is all that glue going to get into my system and give me some horrible disease? (link)
|
Envelopes are probably better for you than Jell-o or twinkies. No worries!
|
how do i get people to ask me questions? (link)
|
Give detailed answers to open questions and people will either come to you for explanation or know they're getting something good on a fresh question.

I know if I dry my wool sweaters they're shrink, but I don't have time to lay these things out to dry... can I just blow dry them? Will that shrink them just like a dryer would? (link)
|
Heat + wet wool = trouble!
I'd suggest wearing something else tonight/tomorrow and drying them the proper way.

I created a website on Bravenet (bravehost) and I've almost finished. I used frames for it, and when i veiw it in visual editor, it works, but when I look at it regularly, it doesn't. I have my lj as the center frame thing, and the side is an image map, etc. What am doing wrong? I went to FAQ and copied it exactly as bravenet said to do frames. ARGH! (link)
|
I need more details (post a new question with the URL of your site, please), but if you need the reference on frames, you can find the W3C reference at http://w3.org/TR/html401/ (look for the frames section, all of HTML is there in exacting detail).

Hello guys,
I'm in the habit of baking sugar cookies for most major holidays, and this Yuletide, I was given the suggestion that, for the benefit of all my geeky gamer friends, I make D&D shaped cookies. This instantly sparked my interest. I'm already thinking about elfcookies with sparkly tunics, unicorn cookies with white frosting, pretzel sticks with a doubleheaded axe... but my friend wants Orc cookies. Typical. How am i supposed to make an Orc with a gingerbread man shaped cutter? I can figure out how to make an orc shape and trace around each one, but here are my problems:
1.How can I make brown or dark frosting that isn't molasses (too sticky) and will stay put, or dry hard so I can stack the cookies without mooshing them? I usually use a milk and powdered sugar mix that dries hard, but how to dye it brown or black?
2. What sort of edible decorations can I use for armor? Chex? m&m's? I can't think of anything good!
Anyone have any good ideas? (link)
|
1) Regular frosting + cocoa or instant coffee will give you some brownness... you can do the World's Simplest Glaze with 1/2 c. icing sugar + a slow drizzle of boiling water... stir, adding water until putty-like and then add seasoning. You kind of spread it on to _hot_ baked goods and let it sit there and smooth as everything cools. (do _not_ let the cookies cool too much... make the icing before or while they bake!)
Most boxes of food colour (with 3 or 4 little bottles) have a colour mixing guide on them that'll get you started on any given colour. Remember, a little goes a long way with that stuff.
2) There are little silver-coloured edible sphere things that might make passable chain mail or scale mail... they look like BBs... you could use them for trim and make a tabard + shield with food-colouring + icing above, or go the whole hog (although that many might be a tad crunchy)... a cluster of them probably make a good head for a mace or flail too. Shreddies are a bit flatter and browner than chex for wood/woven parts of the decorations.

Well, a guy named *John just asked me out a few days ago. I have liked him for a long time. We went out the other day and are planning on going out again. Now, I have no clue what to get John for Christmas or his birthday. He plays soccer although he's majourly obsssed with lacrosse. He also likes hockey. His 13th birthday is Christmas Eve. So, if you have any ideas, please tell me. I want to get him something that shows i put thought into it but isn't too serious. i was thinking of getting him a signed lacrosse ball but I don't know any famous lacrosse playeres. Does anyone know what would be a good present idea? (link)

You aren't expected to understand everything about a person right away... but watch and listen for a bit and see what he's missing (maybe his gym bag is destroyed and needs replacing, maybe he's just discovered author X and you can get him an early short stories compilation or a signed latest novel, whatever...), or get something sweet and delicious... chocolate, sponge toffee, butter pecans (if you haven't tried these, they're delicious!), chocolate-covered coffee beans (if he's into the caffeine thing)... whatever!

Okay, I have a question now. Here it is:
How can I feel the fire?
(*thinking* If only Gackt were an advicenator!)
(*Sings* I need to feel the fire, fire, fire! To keep me warm, I got to feel the fire!!!)
URQUAT!!!!!! TOG!!!!! Okay, I'm done now. (^_^;) (link)
|
1) move around until you can see a fire, set moved := false
2) If you can feel it, stay put.
3) If you can't feel it, move a quarter of the way closer, set moved := true
4) If it is uncomfortable, move a quarter of the way further away (watching out for other fires), set moved := true
5) If moved == true, go back to step 2
6) Optionally, add or remove a layer or two of clothing to keep the non-fire-heated side of you at a good temperature, or to remove extremely flammable clothes (I don't know the details... ask MFS)
7) Consider changing the side of you that faces the fire periodically.
Now you should be basking pleasantly by the fire.
Troubleshooting:
Problem: I'm on fire!
Solution: You got overenthusiastic and moved more than a wuarter of the way, didn't you? That, or you've got a poor sense of what constitutes comfortably feeling the fire. Stop, drop and roll... away from the fire.
Problem: I can see more than one fire.
Solution: Choose fireplaces and woodstoves over open fires, then select a fire by who else is around it. Go for one with room for you and people you wish to share it with.

..ok...soo....its been a few months since my boyfriend and I broke up, and I was upset, but now I'm ok with it. And he has a new girlfriend, but yet...my friends say he always watches me when I walk past, but he tries to hide it (he doesn't do a very good job). And when you ask him if he would ever go back out with me, He's like No I'm happy with (we'll call her Bob) Bob. So then what's with the watching me crap? Could somebody explain it to me? Ahhh. Thanks. (link)

People are silly that way. You were part of his life, so you will be for a while. It's hard to just pick up and go, and way past the attachment phase you'll still be _important_ or _interesting_ ...exes and ex-crushes tend to be.
Eyes and brain-stems can't always be overridden by brains, don't worry unless he starts reacting more worryingly. If it really creeps you out, let him know or spend less time in his field of view.

One of my best friends is a hacker-gamer who, I suppose, can get anything he wants. He's a loner and a cranky brilliant sort of guy. Thing is, I dont know what to give him for Yuletide giving--it's illegal for me to buy a gun, even though that would please him, and I can't afford a motorcycle. I want to give him something good. Anyone have any suggestions? (link)
|
I'd find out his preferred caffeine delivery method... if he's a coffee fiend, a stovetop espresso thing and some good organic/fair trade espresso coffee will set you back something like $40 Canadian. If he's a sweet, fizzy caffeine type, maybe a few bottles of Bawls, some ice packs and a little insulated lunchbag (in black or camouflage, of course) would be good.
I know it's unfair to stereotype hacker/gamers as caffeine hounds, but it's a good stab in the dark...

Why is the grass outside my window green? (link)
|
1) because you live somewhere where it hasn't been snowed over just yet.
2) because green grass survived and reproduced better over the millennia than other colours in your region.

y cant penguins fly cause they have wings and stuff (link)
|
Their wings are short and stubby... good for water but not enough lift for air. Just like we people can kind of "fly" in water but not in air. The trade-off is good for penguins though: normal birds can dive a bit but they can't really swim with their wings.

Look I have this boyfriend his name is Buddah and he has a drinking and drug habit and wont stop until he get's probation. Also there's this perfect boy in school name Maurice and he want's to go with me,So should I break up with Buddah and go with Maurice or stay with Buddah??????? (link)
|
Ditch Buddah (he sounds like bad news), wait for a bit (a couple of weeks maybe) for the awfulness of Buddah to get out of your system. See if Maurice is still interested/interesting. Go from there.

What do I do to stay focused and quit procrastinating? (link)

Get everything you need nearby, everything you don't need further away, and just start. Once you're off and running it'll be easier to keep going.
