Hey i have to write a 8 page essay on someone in history how somehow affected world history. (It can't be an american) I was thinking maybe an Australian or African person, preferable Australian. Any ideas???? Thanks a bunch
the problem with australians is that because of relative isolation for most of the major trade movements in world history, they haven't had a great deal of impact on the world pre-turn-of-the-century. your best bet is to do someone like chinggis khan or ibn batutta. if you're dead set on doing something affecting africans, try looking up the sugar kings or the rulers who supported the trans-african slave trade. my personal favorite world history topic is trade and the effects it had on cultural integration. check out the book The World That Trade Created. another great idea is to look at various revolutions in the context of the french revolution by isolating a person who had a large part in it. there's so many things that affect world history that it's impossible for me to list them out.
Okay, so me and my school went to our One Act competition to do the play "Cut" by Ed Monk.
What we recieved that night was extremely unfair, and I want to hear if you think it's unfair too.
Our school isn't the richest, and all the schools we went up against have got money.
1. We got a STANDING ovation in the B division, and we were the only ones.
2. The judges ripped our piece apart in critiques.
3. A schools were INTIMIDATED by US in the B division before we even got on stage and afterwards, ALL of the schools absolutely LOVED us. LOVED us. We got so much support.
4. We went to the award ceremony. All of the schools got many awards. We recieved ONE award for comedy. Later we found out that 2 of our cast members got awards as well, but they "mysteriously" disappeared.
5. The final awards came and we didn't place. Our entire school was crying their eyes out, because we got singled out. It wasn't fair.
6. ALL of the schools came up to us and wondered why we didn't win or place, even the A schools.
7. Some guy called our director a dirtball.
This was truly unfair and I've never EVER been treated with so much disrespect in my life. Looks like only the schools care about us. It was unprofessional, unfair, and embarrassing.
Do you think it was unfair?
I don't.
here's why. I didn't see any of the one-acts and I am not one of the judges at this competition. I can't judge whether or not your one act was really different from any of the others and I don't know what the judges were going for. last week I was in a beauty pageant where I had fantastic crowd appeal, but the judges thought I was too harsh to be crowned. it happens. life goes on.
here's the worst part about your posting: attitude. you know you did great theater. the audience knows, the cast knows, the crew knows. why do a few judges matter? when theater becomes a competition it stops being fun. lighten up. we're just about telling stories.
what kinds of shirt styles should i wear to make my arms/shoulders look skinnier?
you can actually wear any shirt that has the correct fit across your back and armpits and you'll be fine. you want the armscye (shoulder seam) to hit at your shoulder. hitting before your shoulder makes it look like no shirt can fit your broad back. hitting right after your shoulders or doing a minor drop sleeve looks like you can't pick out clothing to fit. any kind of sleeve that doesn't cling to your arm will work as far as making your arms proportionate, but if you do too much sleeve you may end up looking like you're trying to hide. as for shirts without sleeves, you want to go for a one to two inch strap that will be proportionate with your frame. if you go down to a spaghetti strap the contrast will make your shoulders look even wider, but again, don't go so large that it looks like you're trying to cover something up.
So my school play is soon. We had to buy shirts and pants and stuff for our costumes and someone decorated them. Well, the person who decorated mine apparently sewed something on the color, so it no longer stretches-meaning I can't get it over my head. And when I finally did get it over my head, my locket from my father broke. I was already upset about this. What else.. the stuff on the side scrapes my arms and is quite irritating! And so I asked a few supervisors of the show what I should do, and they said I couldn't do anything about it?!
We aren't allowed to take them home either! My friend had asked but one of the supervisors just ended up yelling at her that it wasn't allowed because they can't trust that anyone will bring it back! No exceptions whatsoever.
Please don't say its fine I will only have to wear it once or anything. I now have scrapes all the way up the side of both my arms, my necklace broke from getting caught in the super tight non stretchy collar (like the collor was so tight when I put it on that the locket went up with it while it was still around my neck and the thing snapped). I'm quite angry by this.
figure out what they did to the sides and collar and send a question to my inbox. there's a quick and dumb solution for every stupid costume mistake the average joe makes and I've made most of them myself. generally, with a collar like that I'll cut a it and cut down the shoulder and attach a panel of fabric and buttonholes. you could probably jimmy that with some safety pins. Generally, any mistake can be fixed with safety pins in amateur theater.
i'm having a quiz on adverbs tomorrow
and i suck at them! i can't tell the
difference between an adverb and other
parts of speech. i can do the ones that
end in "ly" but if it doesn't end in
"ly' than i'm screwed.
how can i tell if it's an adverb? does it answer the question when or who?
what I always think is that an adverb adds on to the verb or adjective. it describes it somehow in further detail than the verb can do alone.
I want to lose 10 pounds in the next month or so. Are there any effective weight loss options for vegetarians? I excersise and eat moderatly healty, but i still can't seem to get any weight off!
your best bet is to quit eating processed foods and go on a whole foods diet.
My predicament is pretty complicated, I gotta say. I don't really want flimsy answers or something that's just going to reiterate what I've typed down. Solutions people, I need soluttionnnssss.
Ok. So. To start at the beginning I met this guy. I'm practically the only democrat in my school so when I met him and found out he was a democrat I was more attracted to him. So we've talked for a long time and he's been really nice, and I draw in class and he's taken an interest in my art and all that stupid sappy cheesy CRAP.
But anyway. One day he tells me he's making a Bolshevik's club at my school. I had no idea what the Bolshevik's were; I just assumed it wasn't anything bad because he wasn't a bad person and we seemed to share the same views. He showed me what he wanted, and it was a girl and a boy standing side by side and the arms closest to eachother are raised. The girl is holding a sickle and the boy is holding a hammer-thing, and they're crossing them. So I just agreed and said I'd try and get it done over the weekend.
Well I come home, and decide to do some research on these 'bolsheviks'. Sadly, I came to find they were communists. Communism is not something I believe in. It is an extremely left wing theory where all classes are to be equal. I don't think anybody can excell or live up to their full potential that way. I just don't find it fair, or right.. if we lived in a communist world what would the point of trying be?
So I was naturally appalled that I had agreed to endorse this club with my drawing. But what was I going to do? I still kind of like this guy even if he is a little extreme, but I don't want to support communism with my drawing (the drawing would be used on flyers around my school to support the club)
So, I have to have come to a solution by sunday night, at least.. help me, please?
In Marx's Concept of Man he states that communism is the highest form of government with socialism as a step to it. Pre-Engels Marx did not believe in a full-on rebellion to reach communism. He wrote a great many vague things that can be taken any number of ways by any people. Communism is actually a fascinating subject that should be discussed more beyond the perceptions the West tends to believe because of America's cold war with the USSR. Research it, would you? Then make up your mind.
as for your situation, find out what he actually believes and then decide whether or not you want to make the poster. Also, warn him that starting a communist club in a largely right-wing school is not a fantastic idea.
May I still consider myself vegetarian if i do not eat chicken, turkey or beef, but I still eat fish ocasionally?
fish is not a vegetable.
My big toe is broken. Plain and simple, it is definitely broken, please trust me. I haven't told my parents about this, because I am afraid to go to the doctor. It's been broken for about two weeks now. It feels like it hurts more and more everyday. Which might make sense, because since no one knows it's broken.. I am always the one having to go up and down the stairs for everyone and driving everyone everywhere. I never get to rest it. And it's disgustingly swollen. I just hide it like nothing is wrong, and no one would ever know. I just can't do it anymore. It hurts. So my question is, can anyone tell me what might happen if I go to the doctors? X-Ray? Height/weight? Think I might get a cast? Crutches? I am seriously very frightened. For the past two weeks I've felt like I'd rather live with this pain rather than face the music at the doctors. And another thing, is there any possibility the doctors might tell me it's best to leave it alone and stay off of it as much as possible? Could it "heal" on it's own? If I keep my mouth shut about it, will the pain eventually fade on it's own? What would be my consequences by not taking care of it in a proper medical fashion? Finally, I am over 18 years, and we don't have any sort of health insurance. How much would it presumably cost to take care of? Anything you can give me is more than I already have, so thank you so very much!!
since you've waited this long, next winter you will have arthritis all through the bones near the one you broke. it will be incredibly painful for the rest of your life.
second, because it's your big toe you absolutely need to go to the doctor. any other toe you're fine with taping it to the other ones, but your big toe controls balance. typically they cast these when they break and tell you to stay off them.
go to the doctor, now.
So its like 3/4s thru the basketball season and my shoes SMELL TERRRRRIBLE.
I tried putting little air fresheners in them...ive tried stuffing them with newspaper(read it in a magazine) and NOTHING works.
Im afraid to put them thru the washer because before it screwed up my last pair.
Anyone have ANY way to make them smell better???
Thanks!!!
throw about a tablespoon of baking soda into your shoes. shake it out after a night. it should kill most of the smell. if not, use more baking soda.
I'm going to be wearing high heels [3 inches] for the first time tomorrow.
I can balance..
Is there anything I should know about wearing them?
Like.. how do I get up stairs and stuff without getting the heel part off?
I really dont want to fall or slip.
always always always walk on the balls of your feet when dancing or going up stairs in any kind of heels. it'll make it so much easier to balance and get around gracefully. it's how the tap dancers do it.
Hi, I need a glue that's safe for use on skin - I'm going to a fancy dress party and I need to glue some false hair (beard, moustache etc) to my face.
What kinds of glue are there that are suitable for this purpose, i.e. they won't damage my face skin but the hair willl stay stuck all night.
If anyone can give brand names/shops that sell them in the UK, that would be even better.
Thanks!
spirit gum is sold wherever costume make-up is sold. just make sure you get the remover as well otherwise you'll lose all your eyebrows like I did one time.
I attend Trenton Catholic Academy @ McCorriston Campus in Hamilton, NJ. The students are required to complete Christain community service in order for us to graduate. I think that it is a great way to gaive back to the community and help others. I also feel that it is unfair because students have homework, activities, sports, and doing service hours adds a heavier burden. I find it hard to deal with all the things in your personal life, private life, and the things at school, and to add on to that its hard. For me, it gets me stressed out because I have a lot of responsibilities, and its hard to deal with everything at once. I try to fing the time to balance all these things out but its hard. To have to complete community service is just taking up more of the free time that i have and I get very stressed out. I would just like to know if you think schools should have community service, and a reason why.
community service is awesome. I think it should be required of everyone.
that said, I don't think there's anything stopping you from working community service into what you already do. my best friend needed to complete a grueling service project for his eagle scout badge and was planning on making something up. I knew it wasn't very him to do anything but theatrical lighting. It's who he is in the community and he usually spends hundreds of hours a month doing theater related activities anyway. he's lighting our spring show to get his eagle scout and he's having a good time with it. you do activities? make your activities into community service. I started doing that in 8th grade and now I'm swimming in volunteer commitment that I love. I teach music to children because I love music. I make costumes for community shows because I love making costumes. I visit the elderly because I like hearing their stories.
I don't wash dogs or serve at the food kitchen or tutor because I hate doing those things. makes sense?
What's Buddhism and some of the ideas? I think I might want to convert. A friend said they are a lot happier since reading about it.
you should check out any of Deepak Chopra's books. He writes as a Buddhist to the non-Buddhist but it's not the end all be all of Buddhism. It's more philosophy based reasonings for connections between religion with a Buddhist undertone.
I'm allergic to every type of deoderant i've ever tried. I've seriously tried everything available at stores (like walmart) Including men's! my mom just bought me some thats supposed to be all natural and hypo-allergenic.. but it made it worse.
I have this horrible rash on my armpit from it that hurts and looks kinda gross.
Is there anything a doctor could prescibe or that i can get myself to stop this irritation!?
if you shave your armpits stop until the rash goes away. shaving could cause broken skin in that area which would be complicated by any deodorant. then try the all-natural deodorant again and see if it's any better. if it's not then you need to see a doctor, but if it is then it's a problem with broken skin and you need to find another method of removing the hair there if it really bothers you.
I come from a fairly poor family (we are barely holding onto our house, and I pay for my own food, clothing, school supplies, etc.) I turned 16 in November but was unable to have any kind of party (we can't even afford chips and soda for an at-home party). It upset me at the time but I thought I'd gotten over it. Recently, for whatever reason, I've been really upset that I didn't get to have a sweet sixteen. A lot of people forgot my birthday too! I had tried to feel better before by reminding myself that I could have a big 18th or 21th birthday party...but I'll turn 17 as a senior and so all my friends will be in college when I turn 18. I don't know, I just feel like I've missed out on a rite of passage and that makes me really sad. Any ideas to make me feel a little better?
if when you're about to turn 17 it really still means a whole lot to you have a party. make it a pot luck and invite your closest friends. assign each of them something to bring like chips or soda or pretzels and then cook up a really simple entree. play board games or whatever.
pot lucks are the only kind of parties that I've been to that have been successful.
if you get to college and still haven't had a birthday party, trust me, the opportunity arises. back in november my brother and his girlfriend and basically the entire floor threw a birthday party for this girl who was pretty homesick. if you tell people you've never had a birthday party they'll party just for the sake of partying.
hello :] i saw on here that
if you can whiten your teeth
if you mix baking soda and
salt together and brush your
teeth with it after your done
brushing it with the toothpaste.
is that safe? just wondering :]
baking soda will not whiten your teeth, but it's a great toothpaste. essentially, all toothpastes are some fancy incarnation of it.

is this eyeliner in walgreens or rite aid or anyother? and how much is it there and would you recommend it thanks
I'm really not the one to ask. I wear make-up typically two or three times a month for shows or other performances. I use a liquid eyeliner pen made by ben nye. I don't suggest it for everyday use because ben nye is super pricy and it's made to look good from 20 feet away. it's stage make-up.
My grandpa died recently, and I am not sure how to deal with it. I feel like I have everything, grief, sadness, still inside me, but it wont come out. I think I have not come to terms with my feelings, just pushed them aside. What should I do?
find something that's unique to you and use it as expression. a year and a half ago both of my grandfathers that I knew died in the same week. I pushed it all aside to focus on the musical I was in at the time. later I started writing about my grandpa pat furiously because I was forced into dealing with it every day as my bus drove past his old house. so I wrote poetry about him and the house and my anger at everything. doing the musical helped with my other grandpa dying. both are activities unique to me. I can't just tell you to write and you will and it'll be fine because you might be a painter. the point is that you need to do something to channel it all out.
so i'm going to college next year and i currently have a fairly new toshiba laptop with windows...i was wondering if a mac would be better for college? i know they're better with graphics and such and i can use both but i've been using a pc longer. are there any college students who have an opinion on this?
please no answers from 13 year olds
I'm not in college, but I'm in a demanding high school program. I don't do anything special on my computer beyond word processing (not using microsoft word, but using appleworks) to take notes and write papers and scheduling and media related things, but I'm not a heavy user of graphic software.
that said, I have a macintosh computer. I've had the same one since august of 2005 and I've had absolutely no problems with it. it took me fifteen minuets to figure out how to use it once I got it out of the box. I still discover new things that are completely interested and streamlined with the rest of the computer. Everything works like one package because it is ONE thing. every program has the same layout and uses the same hotkeys which are easy to get the hang of. buying this laptop was the most genius move of my life.
if you're frustrated by windows or if you just want a new change buy a mac. go to an apple store and see if it works for you. it worked for me a year and a half ago when I made the switch.
in short:
no virii.
everything matches.
long battery life (mine is 6 hours).
fantastic media apps.
all-inclusive packages.
nifty widgets.
shiny white pretention in computer form.
