advice

i dont understand the lewis dot structure theory, i looked for help, but i cant find any. so if you can help me, answer this question please.

What are the lewis dot structures for Silicon, Sodium, Beryllium, Oxygen, Chlorine, boron, Lithium, Neon, Helium, Carbon, Magnesium, and Hydrogen

i know its a lot, but please i need the help. Thanks! =)

here's a good website:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_dot_structure
lewis dot structures only deal with the valence (outermost) electrons, or the s and p levels (if you've learned about that in chemistry). so, you can assume that the outermost orbital for the s-block is the s orbital, and the outermost orbital for the p-block is the p orbital. so... as for any of those elements that you named... if they are in group 1, they only have one dot (potassium and the elements that are above and below it). if they are in group 2, they have two dots (calcium and the elements that are above and below it). all the other elements after that would have two dots. this is because as you go from left to right in the table, you add one valence electron. that is because in an element, there are going to be equal numbers of protons and electrons to make the charge neutral. so, if you add one proton, you will have to add one electron. it's the difference in sodium and magnesium... one electron and one proton. so if you start in the p-block, boron would have the two s dots on the right side, and it would have one additional dot. carbon would have one more dot than boron, nitrogen would have one more dot than carbon. and then, when you get to the noble gases (group 18), you should have an octet of electrons- that means eight electrons in the outer energy level, which means eight dots. so if you ever see a lewis dot structure with eight dots, you know that it's a noble gas. if you even see one with seven dots, then you know that it's a halogen... with one dot, alkali metal, and with two dots, alkaline-earth metal. i don't want to give you the specific answers to your lewis dot structure questions because we're not supposed to give homework answers, but i really hope that this helped :)

Hey there,

This goes out to everyone using Wikipedia, can it really be trusted as in 99.9 %?

I use it quite often for my assignments, as it's quite time-consuming to go through all the books.

wikipedia is normally very reliable for just random information. however, if you are going to cite something in an assignment, it's best not to use it. none of my teachers will accept it as a legitimate source. when i have to write a paper over something i know nothing about, i always read the wikipedia article so i can have an idea of what i'm writing and then i click on the sources at the bottom. wikipedia's editors are really good though and they do correct errors. i pulled up a wikipedia page one time about a person and it said that they had died in a car wreck... i was a little confused, so i refreshed the page and it was gone (the person is still alive).

lately, my urine is darker and has a strong odor. i've had infections before but this time.. i'm not sure what it could be. there's no change in discharge, no burning when i pee, no cramps or sharp pains. Just orange tinted urine and a strong odor. It's not a bad odor, like a yeast infection, just.. has a really, really strong smell. could this be related to dehydration?

that does sound like dehydration. one day this summer i was outside and got really dehydrated and that's what happened to me (and i blacked out and fell down). it all got better once i started drinking water with meals and stuff. i read somewhere that the 8 glasses of water a day thing is somewhat of a myth because there is also water in the food that you eat, so don't go off and drink gallons or anything but you might want to change your water drinking habits just a little bit.

EDIT: hmm, well that's definitely weird then. normally that would happen to people that only drink soft drinks and stuff. if it doesn't go away in a few days, call your doctor and ask. because there's no pain, the only other thing i can think of is if you dramatically changed what you eat... but surely a doctor will know.

do you think it's possible to have a friend that is attractive and never ever have any romantic feelings for them?!..if so why or why not?!

yes, i think so. i don't really count "romantic" the same as lust though. someone is more likely to lust after an attractive friend. but yeah, it is possible, because i have a few friends that other people think are complete hotties but i don't have feelings for them.

okay this question is really random and weird..

but which is correct to use?

use to / or used to?

when you say them in a sentence or something?

or does it not matter..?

is there a difference?

the correct grammatical form of what you're trying to say is used to. as in: "i used to do drugs. i still do, too." most people pronounce it like "use" but it really has a d on the end.

I hear that sodium is really bad for you but sometimes I hear people say that this food is really good for you because of the sodium. Is sodium good or bad? =/

there's a certain amount of sodium that you absolutely need, but excessive sodium (such as in potato chips, french fries, ramen noodles, etc.) is not good for you. in a health class i took one time, my teacher talked about a lady who went on a very strict diet which cut out all sodium. after a few weeks without sodium, she basically dropped dead. so it is a necessity for your body, but that doesn't mean you should load up on the salty snacks. once in a while is okay. but if you are trying to be healthier, you might want to choose foods that are low in fat over foods that have little or no sodium.

do you blow dry your hair? or air dry? i always blow dry it which is bad? what should i do? or buy a heat protecting spray? i dont know of any

air drying is better for your hair, but my hair is kind of crazy so i either have to blow dry it or like braid it wet before i go to bed. if it's possible for you to let it air dry without it looking weird then that would be awesome for your hair. over the summer i only heat styled my hair like three times and my hair was really really healthy, so it does make a difference. if you're going to heat style it every day, then get some leave in conditioner, like infusium 23 which is in a grey spray bottle.

sex is supposed to be between people that love each other. if you don't even remotely like him, then what's the point?

First of all, I'm a musician....sort of.
I write and record my music and I love it.
Many people, some that I don't even know,
have said that its good...check it out at garageband.com "4xWise" and judge for yourself.
OkOk let me start again.. I'm a Mixed Martial Artist....sort of. I train and fight in local competitions and I love it. The team I train with tells me I'm pretty good at it.
I have a fulltime job and a family so there is not enough time to do both full on and I'm tired of goin halfway with it. Thats why that song isn't as good as it could be.
Every time I do one I wish I was doing the
other. I can't make up my mind.
The wife of course, wants me to stop fighting
saying that I'm getting old. I'm 29. I love MMA.
You could win 8 fights and almost open your own school.
Then theres nothing like it when your creativity
starts flowin and your ideas come together......
..... Whatdya think?

since i'm a musician (and i love recording too) i want to say to follow that. however, you have a family to look after so that might not be the best choice. not that you're not very talented- you are, but for now it would be better to stick with the full time job and the mma so that you can support your family. i think your wife has a point though- you won't be able to fight when you're 80, but you'll still be able to play music (which is something that i love about playing music). ultimately, it's your decision, but i think that you should really think about your family and supporting them before you go off and do something crazy. but think about this too: if you do open your own mma school, then you will be working for yourself, which means that if you need to take any reasonable amount of time off to record or whatever, you'll be able to do that. and owning a business requires some amount of creative thought too, which is good in your case. i don't think anybody here can make your decision for you, but being a musician (especially touring and such) is not really the life for somebody with a family. i've been around the business and i've really only met one person who has managed to actually balance the family/music thing (and that's susan tedeschi, who is not only married to derek trucks but an astounding vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter too). somebody told me once that if i don't end up making it in music, it can still be a hobby (maybe not full time, but better than starving on the streets).

im doing this poster project and i have to advertise it to people.. um what type of people need the element, potassium.. and what for? like which jobs and companies. cause thats the point of the poster.. also ive been looking everywhere and what family is potassium in? maybe im just dumb and its obvious.. but yea we're just learning about it now and im in 8th grade, lol. please help fast smart people, cause my project is due tomorrow!

well, since you're learning about this in school, you can assume that the teachers need potassium (for experiments and stuff). my teacher did a really cool experiment with potassium- potassium is really reactive (because of the group/family it's in) so it bursts into flames when it's not stored in water. so my teacher dried off chunks of potassium and set them on our lab tables... we watched, and then all of a sudden the potassium caught on fire. it was pretty cool. anyway, i hope that gave you a different perspective. there are chemical companies that sell stuff like potassium and different solutions and elements to science teachers. i hope i'm not being too vague, but i recently got banned for giving homework answers. the wikipedia page about potassium looks pretty good though.

I don't get chemistry at all!
Just one quesion!

Why aren't there any ionic elements?

thanks.

here's the best i can explain it: an element is a pure thing with a set number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. for an element to become an ion, it has to either gain or lose electrons. so, for example, if you have an ion of hydrogen, it would have one more electron than the pure hydrogen element. so if you had a hydrogen molecule with one proton, one neutron, and one electron, it would be a molecule of pure hydrogen. if you had a hydrogen molecule with one proton, one neutron, and two electrons, it would be a hydrogen ion (which would also give it the noble gas electron configuration of helium). so, if we tie that in with how the periodic table is arranged... okay, the table is in order of atomic number, which is also the same as the number of protons in the element. so, as the atomic number increases by one as we go from element to element, the number of protons increases by one, and the number of electrons also increases by one. so, going with that, hydrogen has one proton and one electron, and helium has two protons and two electrons. so a hydrogen ion (which has two electrons) would have the same electron configuration as the noble gas helium (which also has two electrons). i hope i helped :)

what is global warming and who believes in it? just a question i'm curious for an answer. and is the world going to be destroyed by global warming? and if global warming isn't real than what is really causing it? god?

yes, global warming is happening. here's a better explanation than i can give: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming

basically, we have trashed our earth. pollution, litter... for christ's sake, we managed to make a hole in the freaking ozone layer over australia. by the way, that is true- when i went to australia (it was winter there), i could not go outside for more than 30 minutes without putting on sunscreen because i would sunburn (and we get tons of sun where i live so you can imagine). the sky is even bluer there, no lie. i don't think the world's going to be destroyed by it during our lifetime. it can definitely be stopped though. scientists estimate that before this century is over, polar bears will be extinct because their habitat is being destroyed. isn't that sad?

13/f

I am a very high-performing student. I have never in my entire life gotten below an 86 on report cards, and have an IQ of 143, which I think is pretty good for my age.

I always used to sit in class and be bored as the teacher rambled on for days on things I could not grasp why others did not understand. There were a bunch of helping classes for low-performing students, but never any AP classes. I mean it's only middle school, but you know, it's four years in the same school.

Just this year (8th grade) they installed an AP Algebra class, but I am terribly bored in other subjects, especially English, which is basically full of idiots.

My question is, why did no one ever install advanced classes, but always gave tons of funding to help classes to kids who aren't going to amount to much anyway? I feel held back and kind of betrayed. Can someone explain it to me? I'm not too informed on the No Child Left Behind Act, but someone told me that's why we never got to get ahead. Now I'm learning stuff that's a year ahead of regular classes for Math, but what about other classes? I get really upset about this.

Thanks.

i'm in a similar situation. and i agree with you. it's so frustrating to be surrounded by idiots all the time. and i know that kids should be given "equal opportunity", but that would also mean providing more AP classes for kids. i don't know about your school system, but there were not many advanced classes when i was in middle school, but now that i'm in high school, i'm taking the hardest classes i can and they're pretty challenging but i learn a lot. so i am thinking that it will get better for you in high school. i think you need to talk to a school guidance counselor about how much your classes suck. but, keep in mind that when i was in 8th grade AP algebra was the only AP class, and then the next year i got to take more AP stuff, and now i'm in even more this year. so your opportunities will definitely increase when you get to high school. i completely understand you... it's so frustrating. but there's not much you can do besides talk to your guidance counselor or the school board... but by the time anything happens with that, you will already be in high school. trust me, it will get better.

"God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

Would people take that as really offensive? I read it on the internet and we're making a poster on social justice and I was wondering if I should put that sentence in it somewhere.

some people could be offended... it just depends. regardless of my sexuality, i support gay relationships, but i would not take offense to that because it is an uneducated statement. here's the thing: america is based on free speech, freedom of religion, etc. so if somebody who does not believe in your god reads that, it will not mean anything to them. that's why i don't ever use religion when i'm discussing politics with somebody. regardless of my own religion, i don't force my beliefs on other people and i don't think it's right to be subjected to that. anyway, this has been a weird tangent, but i would find another phrase because that one is kind of old anyway.
