Advicenators discussion: FAQ:GIMP

theymos wrote Wednesday January 17 2007, 10:45 pm:
GIMP is a free photoshop-like program. This is a step-by-step on how to install it, and how to correct things in the picture.
**installing
-go to [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) and download GTK+ runtime environment and install it, then download and install GIMP.
**clearing blemishes, changing colors, etc
-go to view>zoom and zoom in about 400%, or whatever is needed so the area takes up the entire area
-bring up the box with a lot of buttons
-find the two boxes of black and white, double click the black one, and get the color you want the area by moving the big left selector around and press ok. If you want it to be the color of the surrounding area, click the color dropper and click the surrounding area on the picture. The selected color will now be that one.
-back on the box with buttons, find the paintbrush. If you hover your mouse over it it will say "paint fuzzy brush strokes". double click this.
-Click the box with a dot in it next to "brush:", and on the menu select "circle fuzzy(05)"(you will need to scroll down). You can change the (05) to something else for different sizes.
-move the opacity slider on top so it is somewhere between 20 and 50 percent, then press the X on the upper right to close that small window
-back on the picture, draw lightly over the area, till you get it how you want it
-zoom out using view>zoom>100%
**making it black and white
-go to image>mode>greyscale
-if you want to draw anything in color later, you must go to image>mode>RGB. The picture will remain greyscale, but anything you draw will not.

Here are some video tutorials I have made. One of the videos(I forgot which) doesn't work *online only*. Click "download original" on the right to download a working version. Originals are in 800x600 uncompressed AVI video. If you have a slow connection and I happen to be online, you can ask for a compressed version; the size will go down to about 10MB.

Make blinking text, and shows you the basics of GIF animations:

Put a colored border on text(or anything else):

Selectively colorize things in pictures(make everything except certain parts black and white):
