Advicenators discussion: FAQ:building a website

theymos wrote Wednesday January 17 2007, 10:37 pm:
**A website like [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) can be made with very little skills. Just some basic HTML knowledge.
**A website like advicenators requires months of learning PHP and months of writing the site. It costs hundreds of dollars to host.
**You can learn HTML at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
**You can also learn PHP at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) , but you should also know HTML and have a fairly advanced understanding of javascript.
**For the rest of the world to see your site you need a host. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) lists some. Some are deceptive; nothing is "free". Often you will be required to have ads on your site. If you plan on running PHP, make sure they have PHP installed. If you want to use the mail() function in PHP, make sure they have a mail server installed.
**to have a domain name such as [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) , you need to buy a domain name from a provider such as [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) . They are usually about $10/year.
**"if you build it they will come" is not true on the web. "if you build something very interesting and tell your hundreds of friends" is more like it. If it's not interesting, no one will go to your site. Period. If it is interesting, people need to find it first. So tell all your friends, make it serach engine optimized, and trade links. For example, I promote [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) by using it as an example in things like this.
**I will build a simple HTML website for you and show you how to host it if you let me put a small link at the bottom of each page. Ask me a personal question with the exact details of your site and I'll get started.
